But a lot of early firearm development were kind of like that. The Puckle Gun. The Borchardt C-93. The things that took off, and become common/standard, did so because they are brilliantly simple.

I mean a lot of the more complicated stuff still managed to become common/standard for quite awhile; Mauser C96's and Luger pistol's managed to stay in production for 41 and 53 years respectively, and neither of them were particularly simple handguns. Granted this was also in an era where JMB's tilting-barrel locking design for pistol's didn't become the de-facto standard until the latter half of the 20th century.

Both, Spain and China didn't stop production of their versions of the Mauser C96 until the early-1950s.

Norinco made a new version of the Mauser 1932/712 Schnellfeuer (select-fire C96) from 1980 to the mid-1990s.
