My mossberg patterns very well.
Model 88 bought @ K-mart 15 years ago.
Modified choke at an indoor range,25 yards #6 federal 2 3/4 shot all shot inside one of those upper torso targets,not a single stray piece of shot.
Same range I fired 3 hornaday slugs into darn near the same hole,all shots were touching.

Picky, especially with the 18.5" open choke. 3" shells go bat**** crazy for patterns, so I stick to 2.75" and often the low-recoil jobs. Really have to keep the shots close in this config. On clays ( ) I was getting about 50% breaks but that's probably just me adjusting from using an 11-70. Best thing you can do is match your load to your barrel. Put a few brands on paper and buy in bulk the one that has a nice pattern and density.

Are you complaining that you were getting 50% breaks while using an 18.5" open choke?! Ummmm.... It isn't a problem with the shot gun. It is the guy using a riot barrel for clays that is the issue. That's like using a snub-nosed revolver to plink at 200 yard rams. Use the longer barrels, and you will be fine.

As for the OP, look at changing the choke tube to a different one and see if that fixes the patterns. Or try different brands/lots of ammo.

Tried them all...sheet, C, and IC on the skeet range ....7.5 shot 8's , 6's....AA, walmat, federal. Scores were 11's and 12's. Took it the pattern board with every load I had...and saw the patterns were full of holes in different places with every shot.

Is this typical of Mossbergs and other budget shotguns?

First off is everything tighten down? Are you using a barrel that has the accu-chokes in it? Is the barrel staight? Look through it and is it clean or does it have ripples or anything odd looking?

I had a bad barrel on my Mossy 935. The choke was peened and the barrel had ripples in it. Put a new barrel on it and it's now fine.

Haha, was not complaining at all about my ability to break clays with the riotgun, in fact I think those I hit were largely luck and the fact that I was standing close enough to the thrower that my shot column was running with the clay's path. You missed my EEK! smiley.

To OP: throwing bad patterns with all loads is not typical of Mossy's or even Mavericks. Do you no longer own the firearm? What is your model and barrel length? Did you pick it up used or new, and how long have you had it? What's your distance from pattern board? Are your patterns showing enough of a center that you know it's inconsistency in your throw and not your point of aim changing? Are you using 3" or 2.75" hulls?

None of the above.....Have been patternig guns for decades......this was the worst I have ever seen and the only gun in that price range that I ever bought. Gun was new and field config with 28'' range barrel. Gun is long gone.
