putting a action tube on my Maverick 88 - need to changeout the forend to one that racks with an action tube

any lubricant need be applied for smoother racking with the forend on the magazine loading port

good idea? - bad idea?

With the issue's description, I'll say "no" lubricant needed. Lubricant, however, can be considered or used as a finish or surface protectant, but don't put too much on to avoid attracting dirt/dust.

The loading port is essentially a stationary "hole", which isn't something the "action tube" touches. The "action tube" itself, is a fairly loose fit and slides along the magazine tube.

Where I'd consider lubricating is where any parts which are sliding, rubbing, or otherwise activated by the "action bars", which are part of the "action tube".

This lubrication would merely be a light/liquid gun oil product or "CLP". There are so many gun lube products out there and I'm particular to any one product.

I most often use Breakfree CLP or Hoppe's No. 9 (lubricant). But there are always new versions coming out and I've not had the need to try them all. I've also used Rem Oil as it comes in a convenient-for-some-applications spray can.

Everybody will have their favorites, including various viscosities of motor oil, which I've also used.
