      Everything is a personal preference.

With that said I wouldn't suggest a pistol grip, especially for the small women. Harder to control, harder to point steady, recoil is harder to control. Just my $.02

Look for a bantam youth stock for it. It has a shorter LOP so it will be easier to swing and control the shotgun for them. That is if the regular stock is too long.

      Again, just my $.02

ETA: After re-reading your OP you are asking about an AR style - stock w/ pistol grip. Some people love 'em, I hate 'em on a shotgun.

I use both types and am indifferent to which is "best".

If you have different people using this 500 you want to look at a shorter length of pull to help handling quality. I did this to a 500 I gave to my son and his wife. She can run the thing pretty well with a shorter stock.

Hold your shotgun to your shoulder. Pretend it has a pistol grip and adjust your strong hand accordingly. Pretend something bad is coming at you. Now take the safety off.

            IMO...
Because of where the safety is located on the Mossberg 500, installing a pistol grip stock on it is a no-go for home/self-defense usage.

              What Quiet quietly said.

I use a standard type Speed Feed stock so I have four extra rounds with the gun.

i agree with the previous 2 posters about the safety issue. i think the remington 870 would better for u if u wanted a pistol grip considering its safety location.

Go to the sticky section at the top of the page and see how I modded my guns. It will answer your questions about the optimum set up of your gun.

One point I'd like to make is that if you plan on your family using this gun for Self/Home Defense, It would be a good idea to get them and yourself some training on how to actually use it for Defensive Purposes. They weren't born knowing how to do this, and neither were you. There is more to it than you think.

And if you aren't going to shoot the gun very much it is pointless to spend the money on getting the barrel Vang Comped as you will never see the reasons why you had it done in the first place.

Shotguns require training to use effectively. If your women aren't trained, they won't know how to use it when the time comes.

These are the kind of things that will get sussed out during Training.

I tell people if you aren't willing to kill someone in defense of yourself or a loved one, you shouldn't point a gun at them. And if you aren't willing to point a gun at them,,, then you don't need a gun in the first place.

Buy a Whistle! Someone might hear it and come save you?

Randy, your sticky post was my inspiration for getting my old 500 out of the back of my safe. The gun won't be shot very often. I shoot skeet most weekends. My thoughts on the Vang Comp System are that if a followup shot was necessary, it would be a little easier with less recoil and muzzle rise. Just like shooting doubles. I fully understand your point about training.

I ordered and installed the Magpul stock and forend. It’s really nice. I’m glad I didn’t go with the AR style stock.

Do get the adapter for the Remington Butt Pad it makes lots of difference in the recoil absorption. It will also work for a Limbsaver Pad.
