Nice looking gun, congrats
What are your plans for this gun?
Clays? HD?
Give us a clue so we can suggest the proper shells."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" -

She is a looker.Well done.
As far as shells go, it depends on what you want to do with it. 00 Buck for defense or hunting large game, same with rifled slugs. On the other end 7 /12 or 8 shot for clays or just having fun killing cans. I use 6 or 7 shot for upland game birds and rabbits and 4 shot 3" for turkeys.
The standard fair you will find is 2 3/4" especially in bulk. To run the risk of assuming you're ignorant of that meaning the 2 3/4" or (as mentioned above) 3" is the length of the shell and the "buck" or "shot" is the projectiles inside of the shell. Please pardon the assumption.
Did I say that is one beautiful shotgun you got there?Originally posted by superhondaz50I should note, I have a hookup..., just trying to determine the cost to put it in.Originally posted by beerman...He comes out while I'm at work to **** the wife..I shall name him Sancho.Comment

This may help with the code on the barrel.
For HD ammo, there are many threads on the subject. My personal choice is 2-3/4" #1 buck.
For Skeet, I would go with a 28" barrel, 32" would be really long with the pump receiver."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"Comment

First, congrats on a beautiful 870.
Disclosure: I have an 870, and I have disassembled pump shotguns hundreds of times, but mine doesn't have the extended mag. So I MAY be wrong, but if I am, we have lots of guys who will chime in with answers.
The knurled ring in front of the fore end needs to come off to remove the mag tube and allow the barrel to be disassembled from the receiver.
Put a rag around it to get a better grip. If that doesn't work put a bunch of electrical tape on the jaws of some pliers and grab it with that. Be careful. Don't let any metal part of the pliers touch your pristine shotgun. :-)
Edit: Make sure you are turning in the loosening direction.Last edited by 2Stroke; 12-18-2021, 6:35 PM.Comment

DON'T USE PLIERS ON THAT GUN !!!!!!!!!
If you can't get the mag tube off, use a "strap wrench" on the Nut. However it should just unscrew by turning the knurled nut by hand. If the gun has sat for along time it may be a little tight but it still should just unscrew using hand pressure.
You mentioned hairline scratches in the wood. Get some "Treewax" furniture and floor wax, and apply it with 0000 steel wool. Use circular motions to apply the wax and rub it in good which will fill all the little scratches. Let dry and buff with a Terry Cloth Towel. It will look nice when you are done.
Then all you need to do is go to a Defensive Shotgun Class and learn how to operate the gun and yourself. www.frontsight.com
Ammo for general use is #7.5-#8 shot. For Home Defense some LOW RECOIL 00 Buckshot, and some LOW RECOIL Slugs and you will be set up. However you need the training to school you how to effectively use this ammo with this gun.
Do make sure the gun is sighted in at 50 yards with which ever Low Recoil Slugs you pick out. (Preferably Federal) It has Rifle Sights for a reason and the gun needs to shoot to the sights. You sight it in at the range just like a rifle, but start at 25 yards to make sure you are on paper. Then move to 50 yards..
When you find a different barrel, and I'd suggest a 28" Barrel with a Ventilated Rib and Interchangeable Choke Tubes. (Look on Ebay) That will make your gun a "do all shotgun." Don't forget to get a Magazine Plug as well because you can't hunt with any shotgun that will accept more than 2 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber.(3 total)
You done good with that one, and it is definitely an older gun cuz Remington hasn't made anything that nice looking for a long time.

I believe that on the Wingmasters there is a little detent you must push down in order to remove the From the tube extension
Do not force it look for the detent

The take down of the Wingmaster and the express is the same, parts are interchangeable.
The cap/extension should simply unscrew. If you can't do it with your fingers, use a strap wrench."A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"Comment

I finally was able to get the extended tube off my 870. I guess I was just being to delicate and had to use a stronger grip to get it to loosen up. Taking the tube and barrel off was a synch now. How do you take off the front handguard and bolt?
Anyways, I decided to buy some shells for it and picked up several types. By comparison shells are a lot less expensive than rifle or handgun rounds. Anyways while I was at the shop I saw an old Wingmaster with a 30” full choke barrel sitting on the rack that dates to I believe 1962 - barrel code of ‘OK’ and the serial number did not have a lettered prefix. The receiver has some light rust on it and the barrels bluing was worn. The asking price was $249. I considered buying it as I hate to ‘tact’ out my pretty WM and this one could be more of a user. Should I pass or buy?
One thing I noticed with it was the bolt and follower were chrome whereas my bolt and follower is blued. I started looking at photos of other Wingmasters and noticed they all had chrome bolts. This made me wonder if my shotgun was a pieced together or more likely refinished.Last edited by Mac Attack; 12-24-2021, 10:38 AM.Comment
