Garden Guns

ysr_racer says this place is dead so, let's talk Garden Guns and other sub gauge smoothbores.

I'll start, while I have a couple others, I recently picked up a Henry's Garden Gun for fun and possibly a few night hunts for rats. I am really impressed with the smooth action of the Henry and, it will be my knock around rimfire smoothbore so I don't ding up my old Remington 121 Routledge which I acquired from Gene Autry's estate.

Who else has sub gauge shotguns? 9mm? 32g, etc? How do you like them and, what do you use them for?

.22lr doesn't pattern that great period. IT does better from a smoothbore but, it's still not consistent. As far as accuracy goes, it hits where I aim it. I've only shot it once. As soon as I picked it up, I headed home and stopped on the property to run 20 rounds through it before I drove the last 1/2 to my abode. That said, I shouldn't have too much trouble breaking clays with it after getting over the sights instead of a bead. Yes, it can be done. My .22lr Rem 121 with a Routledge barrel has broken clays on a skeet and straight aways with a thrower basically next to me.

Are there any manufacturers making current garden guns? I’ve read about them and find them interesting but have never seen one in the wild.

Only smooth bore I got is a Stevens Favorite #19. Not so much a garden gun but I suppose it would work

Ruger Super Single Six with .22LR snake loads for close-in work on mice and rats. Does that count?

Shoots 22 cal. shotshells filled with #9 shot.

The Gamo one? I have one of those somewhere around here. The ammo is/was expensive but, no matter what "they" say, it can be easily reloaded,

Marlin made a couple bolt actions in the 1980's. They aren't that hard to find. Henry's is currently making a .22 smothbore lever action.

Random question-slash-idea: all of the .410 novelty revolvers advertise that you can shoot .45 colt out of them as well. If you were to acquire a sxs stoeger uplander or other break action smoothbore .410, could you run .45 volt shotshells in them?

You might be able to but, I think you would have pressure issues. SAAMI max pressure for a 3" .410 is 13,500 psi. The .45 Colt shot shells are 16,000 psi and up. Will your gun blow up? Probably not, but its life span will be greatly reduced.

No, 410 bore is smaller than 45 Colt's bullets. The firearms made to shoot both have bores for 45cal bullet. The 410 works in them because the base of 410 wad expands to in larger bore.

Yep, It was my Grandfathers, my dad learned to shoot with it as a kid. Hung on Dad's wall most of my life. I got it because big brother assumed the smooth bore was because it was worn out.

After some research I found it was made that way and after a trip to a good gunsmith I found it is safe to shoot.

Actually have never shot it though. It's worth more to me as the gun Dad learned to shoot as a kid.
