If you're dealing with newbs that don't know shotguns and how to run them or properly pre-flight them before class then I can see that point.

Generally speaking most don't come to a class prepared and are often new users.

If you're dealing with experienced users with a new shotgun (untested) then they should be trained to not go to war with an untested weapon. ANY reliability issues should be sorted before they arrive at class. Slows the flow. Easier said than done.

Some shooters think they can break open the box and go use it.

For the spx users the maintenance level is pretty basic and not beyond goat math. Offer extra $$ care and feeding class to those spx owners that cannot do goat math. Easiest $$ you'll ever make.

Just get a 500 or 590 unless you really want a semi auto. And I’d avoid Mossberg semis as reliability issues seem to crop up. But for pump, Mossberg is preferred over Remington for several reasons, among which is safety placement, shell loading, and having dual extractors.

That being said, these issues can be corrected by ordering and installing a kit from OR3GUN- http://or3gun.com/OR3GUN/about_or3gun_combo.htm. I'd suggest looking through the material OR3gun presents to learn more about their products what what their products modify......
        !
What Paseclipse said. my 930 SPX went from reliable enough (reliable when clean and lubed) to reliable (reliable even w/o cleaning after multiple outings) w/ OR3GUN. Did the internals first and then externals, and spent more $$ than the complete multi-use combo.

A 1301 might be better than a 590 but it's also near twice the cost.

Yes, all very true. I usually turn these issues into teachable moments.
