Modestly Priced TSA Compliant Shotgun Case

I have a 28" Winchester 101 O/U (new, Belgian production) which I like quite a bit. It did not come with any case. I need to fly with it next month.

I need a case which (i) complies with TSA regulations; (ii) looks decent; and (iii) doesn't cost too much. Like to keep it under $100. Prefer a take down case, I don't want it to be too long / large overall. Don't want to project too much of a "tactical" "operator" image, going more for "a day at the shooting club" look.

Any suggestions?

No, no, no. That case is a recipe for a broken shotgun. You need a breakdown case to eliminate the leverage of a long gun. Never, ever, travel with or ship a break action gun fully assembled. If you have time, look for a used aluminum or plastic breakdown case on Craigslist, eBay, Gunbroker, etc. Check with CDNN and Jeff's Outfitters. SKB made some stupendously good cases that were not too expensive. They are out there, but you'll have to look.

I am sort of undecided whether to just get the minimum for this trip, or spend a bit more and get something to use all the time. I will look out for the others you mentioned.

I have a Beretta factory takedown case I presume is TSA. Combo lock. An extra when I got a 2 barrel case. I could let it go within your budget.

Yeah, the more I think about this the more I think I need to up my budget. If you watch out the window at the airport, you can see the way baggage handlers sling the bags around. Its pretty scary. I think I am now leaning towards this one from Pelican for $150:

Description says it has five layers of foam. Anyone have one of these? I assume at least one of those layers is pluck and pull, right? Description doesn't say that.

If anyone has any better ides with the new higher budget, I would be interested, but Pelican seems like a safe bet.

Whatever case you get make sure when locked cannot be opened enough to slide hand in. I missed a flight because tsa said case not secure enough. Went big 5 and bought sturdier case with 4 locking points.

Get a "Pelican" style case ! They are the strongest and are water proof.

These cases can take being banged around and still protect the inside.

I got a Two Gun Case from Cabela's a couple of years ago for $149. You could literally throw it out of a pick up truck and the contents would be unharmed.

There is also enough room for all your accessories for that gun .

In all my Shotgun Cases for my good guns, I keep all accessories, Choke Tubes a Bore Snake Lubricants and Tools in the case so they are always there when I get to my shooting destination. I store all these guns full time in their cases with a Desiccant Bag to suck up moisture. That way they avoid handling dings and dents and safe rash.

Your gun is worth around $2000 maybe more? $150 for a case to keep it in is not asking too much.
