    590 question

Can I install a ATI pistol grip with top swing folding stock and still keep the side shell holder on my 590? Or of the folder gonna interfere with the side holder? My mossberg has the regular wood stock. I did t care for the cheesy plastic it came with. I never ran a pistol grip on a mossberg. Anyone have experience with the top folder pistol grip stock. Just wondering if its a cheesy addition I’m gonna hate or actually useful. I had a M3500 Stoeger with pistol grip. It was fine but that wasn’t a folding stock. The safety was more like a Remington.
I shot a pistol grip 500 and it sucked to shoot. Is the pistol grip/folding stock as much as a pita as a pistol grip only? Marginally better or the cats meow compared to the normal sportster stock?

A pistol grip on a Mossberg makes no sense as you loose the best feature, and ambidextrious safety. How do you plan to use the safety with your thumb wrapped aroudn the grip when its on top?

Yeah that’s why I was asking. I figured the safety was gonna be a issue. I just don’t know how much of a issue. I guess having the additional hand distance movement rather than what I got now? I used a pistol grip only 500 my buddy owns (it had no shoulder stock it was the pistol part only and it was weird to shoot for me ( but I didn’t get much time on it so I don’t know if I would of adjusted to the configuration or just stayed handicapped on it.) . I was just wondering if the pistol grip with the folding stock would get in the way of the side shell holder. . My 590 is in its factory configuration. The only thing I did was swap from the plastic furniture to wood furniture and added a shell holder at the left side of the receiver. I don’t have a issue with that configuration. I was wondering if the pistol grip with a stock would be a better set up. I don’t wanna buy one if it makes it uncomfortable to shoot. Im perfectly fine shooting it in its normal configuration. It’s hard to compare it to my M3500 cause that’s a semi auto and different set up. On my M3500 the pistol grip works fine but the safety is like a Remington by the trigger guard. I’m not looking on doing it for the tactical look. I just ordered my first red dot to see if I want one. If I do I’ll go buy a good one. I didn’t wanna spend a ton if it wasn’t something I cared to shoot through. I’ve been using irons fir years, my only scoped rifles are my deer rifles.

      Thanks.

From the few top folding stocks I've seen, the side-saddle-type holders can, but not always, get in the way. I saw some folding stocks which somehow attached the shell carrier to the rear of the top folding stock, actually the carrier ends up underneath the folding portion of the stock once extended.

For a pistol-gripped Mossberg 500, 590, 590A1, I personally had no problem using the tang-mounted safety using a pistol-gripped stock (Speedfeed brand). It may take some practice, but for those out there considering it, give it a try.

I found a quick rotation of the trigger-hand forward can swipe the safety off (switch forward), and a quick swipe of the trigger finger backward can swipe the safety on (switch backward). It's not a big deal as some folks make it out to be and becomes pretty darn quick.

Side-note. With a Remington 870/11-87, I'll completely open my trigger-finger-hand to push the trigger-guard-mounted safety on (to the right) using my thumb.
