Converting a hunting variant of a pump to a riot gun

I have a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870 - both acquired in the 80's that have just set in the back of a gun safe since I don't hunt.

I was looking at this Tacstar Tactical shotgun conversion kit and wondering what the people here thought of them.

Since I doubt I will ever fire them, how would you do it on a limited budget?

The subject conversion kit comes with parts I wouldn't/don't use: the pistol grip-only; the pistol-grip forend; and the 6-round version of Tacstar's sidesaddle (I prefer a 4 or 5 round shell holder on the receiver to give my hand room when cycling the pump action).

Depending on the base shotgun, I'd first want a relatively short barrel. In CA, this would be 18" (or 18.5" to be safe) barrel. Some folks are OK with having a 20"-22" barrel.

See the thread, above, to get an idea what you might do/want.

There's always training and ammo on which to spend one's money and an instructor and training course will provide ideas as to what will work for you along with how to use the various changes or add-ons.

Back in the 80s I bought a new 12 gauge Mossberg 500 combo. It came with two barrels long with removable chokes and short cylinder bore, it also had regular stock and a pistol grip. I never use the pistol grip, I put a buttstock shell holder and attached a flashlight to magazine with short barrel, that is as tactical as it gets.

Also got a used 870 Wingmaster back in the 80s with 28" full choke barrel and it stayed that way until a couple years ago when I bought an 18" barrel with removable chokes and then a magazine extension so it will hold six rounds. Same thing with it when it gets tactical, buttstock shell holder and attach a flashlight.

The knob stock is more techboy / Hollywood / gang banger than useful and practical. You might want to try one out before doing such a silly conversion...the knob stock will make it more of a challenge to manage defensive loads.

I'll do an inventory of what I got before I decide on what to do.

No idea if the guy who sold me the used Mossberg gave me the shorter barrel too. 30 years ago, not sure what I would have done with the extra barrel. Also have two Vietnam War era guard type use shotguns - were legal barrels when I bought them - but noticeably shorter than the duck gun. Two Benelli's too - but they have long barrels.

                      Thanks for the input.

                          Roger: did you look here?

Simplest thing you can do is buy a 18" bbl off Ebay and put it on and leave the rest alone.

Since you aren't going to shoot it, that is he cheapest way to get what you asked for.

                            Nope

                            Note that kit

Buy a new / used barrel that will work with your gun in 18-20" from Gun broker / eBay.

(A mossberg 500 5 shot barrel won't fit on an 8 shot gun)

                            Sell your barrel

Most will say it's way harder to shoot a dove than a person.

Stocks that are hunting based are also good for self defense.

Pistol grip and stock is OK on mossberg as you can use the safety. It's horrible on a Remington

Look at the sticky by buchannon as to what he did on his combat shotgun.
