    3.5" shells in 3" chamber?

Curious to get the calguns opinion before I just go for it.

I've got some 3.5" 12 ga shells but have divested of the firearm the shells were intended.

I think I can get away with using these shells in a 3" chamber break action gun.

    What say you?

      It's depends

A 3" chamber will absolutely allow a person to chamber and fire a 3 1/2" shell once.

The shell length is with the petals open on most rounds. So a typical 2 3/4" shell is only 2 3/4" once fired and the crimp has opened.

The taper in a shotgun starts with the forcing cone.

Most 3" shells will chamber in a 2 3/4" chamber.

When you fire the shell, the petals or the crimp will jam into the forcing cone.

Now you get to take a rod- insert it down the bore - hammer out the spent case

There was an ND inside of Turners before they moved out of Lawndale into redondo.

Employee chambered a 3" in a 2 3/4" chamber to prove this fact.

Somehow the locked up action would not let the guns action open.

Someone pulled the trigger and shot the floor. One employee took the ricochet lead pellets into their legs.

Deformed lead pellets are evidently very difficult to remove.....

So.... if you have a long chamber or a very slow forcing cone transition you could get away with being stupid.

How dumb? Probably not as bad as using electrical tape on 38 super so you can shoot them in a 38 special snubby.

        No-no-no. Would you jam a .357 into a .38?

Pause thread, time out. I have to know more about this tape on 38 Super thing. Did I miss something somewhere?

Shotshell pressures seem to be a worrisome area for many shotgunners, especially reloaders.  They worry that if they shoot excessive pressure loads that their shotgun could well “blow up.” They’ve heard that from their buddies, but they really don’t have any solid scientific evidence to support those assertions.

There is a pretty big difference in pressure between a 3" and a 3.5"

38 super has no rim. Need some electrical tape to get 38 super to stick in a 38 special snubby.

I have shot 38 Super in my Smith Wesson 686 many times. As a matter of fact I had an extra cylinder fitted to it that was reamed a little larger to accommodate the 38 Super. I also installed an extra length firing pin. The 38 super case is of slightly larger diameter than a 357 or a 38 special so it won't chamber in guns with tight chambers. The 38 Super does have a small rim on it and it will not go through the chamber cylinder. The biggest trouble is that the headspace on the revolver is too large and the firing pin is not long enough to ignite the primers unless an extra length firing pin is used.

It works well and I have fired thousands of rounds out of it. The main reason I did this is because I once bought three thousand reloads from a commercial reloader who had set the powder charge too light to operate a semi-auto. He did not want to pull the bullets and sold me the ammo for a loss. It was loaded with 125 grain lead bullets at 850 fps. I shot it all up and it worked fine in a revolver.

The shell length is with the petals open on most rounds. So a typical 2 3/4" shell is only 2 3/4" once fired and the crimp has opened.

Most 3" shells will chamber in a 2 3/4" chamber.

When you fire the shell, the petals or the crimp will jam into the forcing cone.

Anyone who owns a Remington 3200 will have experience with this.
The 3200 came out with roll crimp ammo in mind and once released everyone switched to star crimp.
The extra petal length rides on top of the forcing cones resulting in more felt recoil.
It was common back in the day for trap shooters to think 3200 shooters were shooting hot loads when all they were doing was shooting 2-3/4 ammo in a 2-3/4 gun.

Most here are to young to remember the Winchester model 12 but they shot whatever ammo you had without issue.
