Repairing shotshells?

Howdy folks, I've got a box of shotshells, green Remington express DCBK 9 pellet #00 buck that are pretty old, probably about 10 years, and are leaking white granules. They seem to be separating at the crimp.

Any way to fix them like melt some crayon wax on it?

How critical are the granules?

Should I just toss them?

Wax would be fine.

I'd rather use them for practice instead of throwing them out ("toss them"); otherwise, give them to someone who will shoot/use them up; otherwise, although I've never done it, wax on the crimp-end should be fine.

Wax or cut the crimp cap then cap with a overshot card and use a roll crimper to recrimp

Imo the granules just keep the shot from rattling around. You can just melt some wax over the crimp and use a razor blade to take off the excess that may be sticking out and touch the bottom of the next shell in the tube (depending on the type of shotgun you have)

YEP ..... I keep several short candle stubs in a drawer in the Shotgun end of my loading bench.

Wayyyy back I started shotshell reloading before plastic was a thing. Topping with a bit of wax (and reconditioning with a heated rod and wax) were customary.

Yep, candle wax worked fine. Just clean your barrel on a regular basis.

I also think the white granules are buffering media. I would not dispose of the rounds, at least use them for practice. I have been reloading shotgun shells for many decades, and it is a common practice to drip candle wax on the top of a shell that is not completely sealed, and I have never had wax build up in my barrel.

I separate the shell from the base and make fridge magnets out of the bases.
