Winchester 1300 problem

My gf has had a Winchester defender since way before I was around. About 2 weeks ago I disassembled it and cleaned/oiled it.(did not dissasemble the bolt) I took it shooting last friday, while shooting one handed the bolt would slide back.(sometimes more than others) While shooting holding the forearm there was no pressure rearward. Im concerned something isnt right. Thoughts please.

I could be reading your question entirely wrong. Are you saying that if you fire the gun that the whole forearm/action/bolt assembly slides back on its own just under the force of the recoil? Or are you saying that the bolt just falls back loose?

And what do you mean by no rearward pressure?

And lastly, did you fire the gun before you took it apart? Does it feel different now than it used to?

It sounds like what you are experiencing is winchester's "speedpump" in action, but it is impossible to tell without knowing the exact answers to my questions above.

The winchester uses a rotary bolt with locking lugs - and the action is VERY fast to cycle with VERY little pressure.

When firing holding the forearm, there was no noticeable pressure pushing the forearm back

It was my first time firing it, and she has never fired it one handed

I was expecting a post along the lines of woah thats a problem, after reading that it may be normal I tracked down the manual online and it sounds like all is well. Thanks for your response.

Yes, that's the speedpump. It's fast and smooth, but has a downside as well. If you're trying to do speed reloads, the slightly unlocked action can prevent you from putting new rounds in, as the lifter is locked in place when the bolt's unlocked.

I found I always have to either pump it again to lock it closed, or give it a push to make sure it's all the way forward.

My 1300 did that as well - IMO the smoothest pump this side of an old Ithaca 37 or a Flite King.
