One thing that adds to a shotgun's versatility is that w/the right ammo, a shotgun can reach out farther than most folks who don't own shotguns think, which itself might be a factor in saving your life.



This video is approx. 10 yrs. old, where an old man like me reaches out to 230 yrds. putting round after round on a torso sized target 230 yrds/690 feet away. it never stops to amaze.
A shotgun is never going to be a rifle, and it shouldn't be, but in an emergency, if it's all you got, then by all means use it.

Not everybody is capable of that kind of shooting, but it does mean that w/slugs out of a smoothbore 12 gauge, there's the possibility of you being able to protect yourself out to 100-200 yrds. if there's no other way out.



I wouldn't attempt this kind of shooting at that distance w/o my red dots, but that's what they're for.

I think the video was more about many different types of ammo available for shotguns.

I didn't know the majority of those shown in the video even existed. All I knew that existed were pellets, buckshot, slugs and beanbag rounds.

There is all kinds of crazy crap you can shoot from a shotgun. A long time ago I bought these bolo rounds. Two weighted balls with a chain trying them together. Shot them at a 5 gallon bucket filled with water. We also ordered some flechette rounds.
This magazine that I ordered from had pages of crazy ammo. This was all mail order there was no internet back then,

As far as a shotgun action personally I have yet to have a pump mossberg or Remington fail me. I have a 590 pump. Never had a issue in 30 some years of owning it. The only thing I changed was the plastic handgrip and stock for old school wood furniture.

Thank you sir. Im still a newbie with firearms and really on a limited budget so all my purchases are well thought and so far I have zero regrets with my choices. I have no more plans of buying more. Now I just want proper training.

I keep lots of bird shot for clays on hand but also have a healthy supply of buck and slug

I bird hunt with a Cerakoted and spray painted Mossberg 500, often from a kayak. That thing has been submerged in water, covered in mud, spent countless hours in the rain, and generally been beat up, and it does not fail. Only problem I've ever had was a certain brand of ammo with a smaller-than-spec rim jumping out of the mag tube under recoil. All others, including handloads, have been flawless.

That's why a 590 is my primary home defense long gun.

Well sir if the barrel is rifled they damn sure are a Rifle. IN fact they are a .73 caliber Rifle!

Here's a group shot with my Browning A5 with Hastings Rifled barrel at 50 yards with open sights. It measures 1 x 1.5! Site won't upload photos!!!

Savage 212's and 220's will shoot 2" groups at 100 yards all day long.

Not only is a rifled shotgun a viable weapon out to 150 yards + you have to remember that if you can get a shot on target it will be devastating.

My Non Toxic Slugs Weigh 550 gr! That is 10X what an AR shoots.

Anyone who can shoot a rifle can shoot a Rifled or Smooth Bore Shotgun with Sights. Sure you are not going to shoot something at 2-300 yards, but most shots are under 100 so a shotgun is a viable weapon and especially for Self Defense where the shots are most likely under 50 yards. It is not that hard to make a 50 yard shot on a Man Sized Target. It is part of the "Skills Test" at Front Sight and I can get 5/5 just about every time under time pressure which is getting the shot off in < 5 seconds after changing to a slug. Called the "Select Slug Drill."

Not everybody is capable until they get some training,,, then you'd be surprised how many ARE Capable.

The barrels on my shotguns. AIN'T RIFLED....got it. And that's for damn sure.


Some folks will train, and improve, and some will train forever and CAN'T shoot a lick and never will.

However for home defense and protecting your property around your house a shotgun with buck shot should not be overlooked, most perps will not be standing still for you to shoot and if I have to hit a moving target I would much prefer to start with a shotgun and retrieve my AR if the situation dictates.

Couldn't have said it better myself. You're definitely "preaching to the choir" around here about shotguns.


Here's the "Central Nervous System" for the defense of my home via a coffee table/disguised gun chest. It is in the center of my living quarters in my home.

It's covered w/a canvas table cloth to the floor so no one has an idea of its shape. I have 3 pistols, 3 revolvers, my 2 pumps "BadAss" and "Reptile", and my 2 Veprs.


The Vepr w/the combination muzzle brake/meat tenderizer is loaded w/buck.

The Vepr w/the hex shaped muzzle brake lets me know it's my slug gun which is always placed closest to my handguns. I'm a "lefty" so they're all pointing from left to right.

This protects my family from "right in my face", out to 75-100 yards to the limit of my property.



In order to do that, you'll have no choice but to exploit the versatility of the shotgun.
