    SxS Actions, Sidelock vs. Boxlock

From a cool website I happened upon last night, I little history on how and when the boxlock side-by-side action came about and eventually became the standard.

How the Boxlock Shotgun Became a Standard (10 minute read) https://projectupland.com/shotguns-a...-a-standard-2/

I’ve always been a fan of the boxlock myself, do you have a preference?

I only have boxlock SxSs but would not pass up a fine sidelock if the conditions are right. Figure double the price for a nice sidelock, and sidelocks are more of a field gun than a target gun IMO. My boxlocks are target guns.

I'd love a nice sidelock, but I love my niceish boxlock. It's not quite as svelte, but it's still an attractive gun. I'm confident I can miss equally well regardless of action type.

Both are nice. Here is one of mine.

Project Upland is an interesting, well-done website, but the founder, A.J. DeRosa, is a left-wing POS. Just FYI.

My preference is sidelock. First, there's more space for engraving or to show off nice case colors. Second, it flows better into the stock IMO than the sharp cut off from a boxlock.

But you can always get a box-lock with false side plates to give more engraving surface area and have the same style/look as a sidelock gun.

You could put a Bentley hood ornament on a Honda too, doesn't make it right

But yes, false sideplates are a thing and provide the benefits I was discussing above while maintaining the benefits of a simpler action.
