I was cleaning my Dad's passed down 870 and found the left shell latch became unstaked and popped out when I removed the trigger assembly. I got it back together after cleaning but it was a little bit of a challenge. Is that common to happen and is it worth taking to a gunsmith to have it restaked?

Remington 870 shell latch

Not a uncommon problem with the Remington shotguns. I have an 1100 that has had the same issue for many years. Its little difficult to re-assemble, but the trigger group holds it in place when all together. Its not a requirement that it be staked in place for the gun to function properly. The good thing is you can clean the shell latch and the channel it sits in a lot easier with it out. If I took the gun apart regularly I would probably get practiced in how to hold it in place putting it back together and it would likely take me no more time than if it was staked in place. There is a couple of Youtube videos showing how to use the staking tools available from Brownells, Midway, and others.Last edited by wweigle; 07-02-2021, 3:51 PM.Comment

Bingo wweigle. Folks would be amazed how many times guys call me with a feed issue and simply tell them to clean behind the shell latches and their issue corrected. Also not having them staked makes cleaning high use guns a lot eaiser. Mossberg lataches are not staked so the staking is just to keep them in place when the gun is being cleaned and because of this people let all kind of gunk get buit up behind them.JD McGuire, Owner

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.Comment

Good points. I'll leave as is for now. I was concerned it may cause a functioning issue at some point but it seems to cycle fine once I have the trigger group back in.Comment

JD is back!! It's been a few months since you've stopped by..and quite awhile before that. With that being said..not sure if your situation has changed with Remington. I'm hoping for your sake it has and your business is back up and running. Either way it's good to see you back on the board giving great advice to the members. You've always given your time to helping people on the forum and it's much appreciated!!Bingo wweigle.
