Remington 870 Conversion help

A few years ago I picked up a basic Remington 870 express. It had a pistol grip (no buttstock) and the 18.5" barrel with the factory mag tube extension (see attached pic). I think I've shot it a handful of times and have decided I want to convert it in to a Turkey/Bird gun. I was able to get a factory buttstock (and Camo forend), factory spring (#F19479), Remington mag plug (#19451) and a TOTAL Magazine Tube Cap with Swivel Base - Model TSC-79523. The last piece I'm looking for is the barrel, which eBay seems to be the only place I can find them.

I've seen tons of videos on YouTube that show people adding the mag tube extensions, but not one that shows a "tactical" version converting to one for hunting.

Just wondering if anyone else has done this to their 870 and if they have any advice or suggestions...or if I'm missing anything.

The only other thing I could imagine you might need, aside from the obvious like choke tubes. Is a magazine spring retainer if you have a late production barrel without a ball detent to retain the mag cap. Numrich has them in stock, https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/97910F.

5 years ago I bought a 870 express barrel never used at $90 .it is a choke tube type . I bought a spring the retainer and follower for $20 . Custom builders sell the bolt trigger and the pins . They sell the custom unit at $2800 . The only other shotgun I like is the 1100.

Sounds like all you need is a barrel. Keep checking the marketplace and hopefully you can pick one up. I like the 26” barrel - good for all birds.

I would think all you need for the mag tube is a block that's long enough. You can make your own with a piece of dowel cut to the right length.

That part won't fit in OPs gun. It would require the dimples on the mag tube. OPs gun has the factory extention, so it won't have the dimples. There's another retainer that the police 4+1 guns come with. OP doesn't need that retainer to get the gun to function, it is only handy to prevent the spring from popping out when you remove the end cap.

I think you are good to go. Just remember not to attempt to use 3.5" shells even if your new barrel says its good for 3.5" shells. The receiver is the key there.....must be a super magnum receiver.

If not long enough, maybe a wood dowel. Make sure it’s not too fat in case it gets wet. You don’t want it swelling up in there.

OP already mentioned that he has a remington factory mag plug.
