Remington 870 Tactical Ejection Port Dimension

    Hey guys,

Could someone please tell me the dimension of your ejection port length along the center line? Mine measures 2.97". This is for an 870 Tactical 18.5” barrel that reads 2 3/4” or 3”. I’d also like to know if your ejector spring is as far back as mine. If I’m standing over the Gun lining up my eye with the back edge of the ejection port I can’t see the main bend in the spring. Are yours like that?

The spring is meant/ supposed to be that far back.
As far as dimensions i can measure my 870 in the AM

You hadn't included this issue in your original question, but I'll bring up a caution about the ejector being engaged in the notch at the rear of the barrel of an 870.

I assembled an 870, and racked open the gun and looked thru the ejection port, and the ejector had not engaged the notch at the back of the barrel, which I didn't think you could do (assemble the gun that way), but again this was w/the barrel on the gun.

There was a big burr in the notch preventing the ejector to engage w/the notch, which I filed off, and then I got the notch at the back of the barrel to fully engage the ejector.

I've included a link to all the problems that developed because folks assembled their guns not realizing their barrels weren't engaging the ejector at the back.

As per the OP's pic you can look through the ejection port and see if the tip of the ejector is fully engaged with the notch at the back of the barrel.

I just brought my Remington 870 express home from shooting, never once had an issue with it, and all of a sudden today it stopped ejecting shells, and when I released them, the casing was crushed and bent on one side. I had to remove the barrel multiple times to remove cartridge. I have...

Again you can get the barrel on the 870 w/the ejector not fully engaged w/the notch at the back of the barrel, but shooting it that way will break/damage the ejector, causing malfunctions.

The ejector and ejector spring are fine. I want the measurement of the ejection port to confirm if it is undersize. A fired 2 3/4" shell barely clears during ejection. I doubt that a 3" shell would clear at all on its way out. I know what needs to be done but would like some reference measurements of other 870's to see how far off this one is.

              Is it a magnum receiver?
Since the barrel is marked that it will accept a 3" shell, why don't you try it out with a 3 inch shell?
You may be asking a question about a non existent problem.

I never said they weren't. As I mentioned, I know what your question was, and w/all due respect, I brought this up in case somebody doesn't know about the issue so they don't bust up their gun.

While not providing the measurement you asked for, there was a previous discussion on another venue about the 870, and the placement of the ejector, w/some specifics about halfway down the thread here...

A article in Ducks unlimited showed a 870 makeover where a 3" barrel was put on a 2 3/4" receiver. Will 3" shells cycle well? Any safety issues?

I seriously doubt your 870 is different in any way than any other 870.

Remington is very serious about not changing anything on a Production Line unless God himself commands it. And God never speaks to them.

One mod that is often done to 870's by LEO Gunsmiths is to enlarge the Ejection Port. The reason for this is so that you can load the gun thru the Ejection Port more efficiently.

I don't think your gun has a problem.

"It barely ejects and sometime doesn't so there's that...."

I've spent time on this venue, and there's a long winded discussion that's titled "non mim extractors" which turns into a discussion about the causes of ejection problems which include the interaction of the ejector/ejector spring/extractor/action bar.

I don't agree w/everything mentioned in this discussion but it's definitely worth a read for somebody having a problem.

I agree w/considering/discussing taking things apart, cleaning, and re-assembling to see what that does in eliminating problems, and the fact that some ammo can cause a problem.

There's a discussion of MIM/non MIM extractors, which despite what was discussed, and being a lefty, I had to dis-assemble my 870P to swap out for a lefty trigger (for the safety to go in the right direction) and since I did that and had the gun apart, I had the Volquartsen extractor installed. Best 20 bucks and change I ever spent.

This specific upgrade may not solve your problem, and it might be something else causing the issue, which was discussed on the 870 forum, but I suggest it's worth a read because they cover a lot.

There is one issue which you can experience with Remington 870. It is called "sticky chamber or a "rough chamber". It happens often with cheap ammo. And you need to polish the chamber to be able to use any ammo you want. I have posted instructions on how to polish the Remington 870 chamber some

99% this is your problem. The last few years the bean counters were trying to save money and chambers were not cleaned up/ polished like they needed to be.
If you are local to me I have a 12ga honer and the oil 5 mins on a drill and it will be done.
Ill add my ejection port measurement here shortly.

No problem... Sounds like BajaJames83 is coming to the rescue w/o an expensive fix.

Causing needless problems to save a few bucks, doesn't make sense to me, but then I'm not going out of business.

Oh ****. I already knew the answer to this before i even measured.
                              So a 2-3/4 gum will have a 2-3/4 ejection port a 3" will have a 3" and 3-1/2 will have a 3-1/2.

The shell length is actually based off the fired lenght of the hull.
Measure some of your LOADED ammo..
2-3/4 shells normally come in around 2.3 to 2.6"
3" will come in from 2.4 to 2.7
                              And so on.

For reference my 870 super mag i just measured the ejection port at 3.48 my 870 express came in at 2.98. My father in laws wingmaster came in at 2.72.

These were measured qickly with calipers so I was easily off a couple hundredths but thats irrelevant.
