I have been thinkin about picking up one of these at Big 5, but i read a few things about it having problems related to the firing pins and the receivers. These reviews were about 2 years old, anyone know if winchester made any changes recently to these things. Should i still stay away from this thing?

Mossberg Silver Reserve.

One of my buddies uses a 20ga for sporting clays and it suits him just fine. I haven't seen a malfunction in his gun since he got it.

Others on the board suggest Stoeger and I remember seeing a Remington Spartan on the FS forum for about $350.

I replaced two top firing pins in my 2006 Mossberg Silver Reserve.
Talked to a Mossberg rep at the NRA convention and he said they fixed the problem and is sending me updated pins. Get the serial number off the one you want to buy and call Mossberg, they will tell you if it has updated pins or not.

That is good to know. What is your opinion of the gun itself? The one i checked out at big 5 was a little stiff to open and close, compared to a Tristar over under they had there. Do they loosen up over time? Would you buy one again if you were going to do it over again? Thanks

I think it's a great starter gun. It's still a little tight but has loosened up a bit. The fit is a little high at the stock drop for me so I develop a sore cheek if I get lazy. I like being able to keep up with and sometimes beat 5,000.00 shotguns. So, I won't sell mine but I will someday buy a Win 101 because it fits me perfectly.
