    Wad id

I took apart a shell and am trying to id the wad. The shell was a Winchester Super X High Velocity Steel Shot, 2.75" 1 1/8 oz. #6. See pics for box and wad.

I.D it for what reason? Are you going to reload that gauge?

I'd guess it's a proprietary wad not available to handloaders. At least doesn't look like the steel wads I'm familiar with. Kind of a hybrid really.

Because I have several boxes of this stuff and have zero use for it. Was thinking of braking it down and using everything but the powder for other loads.

Trade those boxes for something you can use.

Would be easier to just buy new wads.

Try and trade them in the ammo marketplace for something you want.

That would be a good non-tox quail load. sell/trade/donate.

                  100 shells = 7# of shot. Maybe $20 in components tops. 10# is $20.

If you dont have use for these shells, what do you intend to load with #6 steel shot?

Crappy hulls. Trying to disassemble and save hulls is problematic. Crimps don't open well so, wads hang up, most "salvage" operations just cut the tops off.

It's not a Winchester wad that's available to reloaders.

Steel data (TMK) incorporates wads that are slit after molding vs. molded slits. This helps protect shot from scrubbing on the barrel. But I am aware of ranges who require non-tox shot with bio wads. There's only a couple wads that meet this and they aren't designed for steel. But plenty use them and in some rather high end guns.

Easy to trade at most ranges.

Wads or shells are not the easiest things to come by these days at least for me.

Just to be clear my plan is to take the wads and steel shot and reload them in a different hull with different powder. Got a load for 1 1/16 oz steel at about 1400 fps.

Though I like speed for steel (actually I like speed for anything that dies) anything I'm killing with #6 steel really doesn't need it. I'd shoot them at anything I'd shoot 1/16 oz less with a bit more speed.

                        Where are you?

What hulls and wads does your recipe call for?

I have no intention of using the powder as I do not know any reliable way of id'ing it. The wad and shot I was hoping to repurpose.

IMHO, you're not getting any value beyond what you already have for a lot of work. What mythical creature are you expecting to slay with the new load vs. the factory load?
