20 ga Browning Auto 5 with Buck Special Barrel with Rifle Sights.

Guns are on Gunbroker and Barrels are on Ebay.

This is to assume you are taking Defensive or Tactical Shotgun Classes.

If you are taking regular Clays Shooting Classes then omit the Buck Special Barrel.

Make sure to get one made after 1963 as it will have the Two Piece Lifter and Speed Feed feature.



Browning Auto 5's are some of the best made shotguns in History and are still not only viable but superior in many cases to anything offered new today. They will easily outlast you and your children with only proper Handling, Cleaning and Lubrication.

If soft shooting is your goal, seek a gas operated auto.

I'm not upon the current crop. My current 20g autos are An (HK imported) Benelli Montefeltro and a couple older Franchi AL48's (all recoil operated). The Franchi's are like greased lightning in the field. Perhaps a bit light for exhaustive range use. I had a pristine Beretta 390 Silver Mallard (gas gun). Shot amazingly soft, but I didn't shoot it all that well, so sold it. Beretta doesn't have the A300in 20g, but do have the A400, albeit a bit above your desired price range.

If durability is a requirement (pretty much always is to me), I'd look to what they use in the Argentina dove shoots. That's a torture test. I know the Benelli is one. The Berettas have been represented there as well.

It's too bad that Remington went under. They were supposed to release 20 ga V3's by this time if they were still operating. The V3 was about the softest shooting gas shotgun made. It would've been perfect.

Are there reduced recoil 20 gauge defensive loads?

Somebody with more gumption could do the math. What recoils more? Reduced recoil 12 gauge loads in a heavier shotgun vs. full power 20 gauge loads in a lighter shotgun?

There is no better shooting 20 GA. than the Beretta 390/391. Period.

Yes,,, I've done 6 of those classes and DG'd the last one. I take both my M500's and the Browning to the classes. I switch back and forth on different days depending on what we are doing..

It is much faster on select Slug changeovers. and I can't make 4 in a row in 2.7 seconds with the pump guns but can do it with the A5. best split was 2.0 with 4 hits.

With the Speed Feed Feature it is faster than all of the Berettas and Benelli's.

Whatever you do get a gun with Rifle Sights as shooting slugs at 50 yards is much easier if you have sights. They are just easier to hit with.

Warning: Once you do a Shotgun Class you will be hooked. I'll be going again next month.
