    Looking for a good semi-auto .410

Can y'all recommend me a reliable semi-auto shotgun in .410 bore, preferably with a shortish barrel? This would be a home defense weapon for my elderly mother. It must be available in a wooden stock. Thanks for any advice!

Rem 1100, I think there's one for sale in the marketplace.

In order for most 1100 to be reliable you need to use 3 inch loads. My 1100 works best with 3 inch shells.

If your Mom isn't a regular gun handler, consider a SxS or O/U shotgun.

I know it's not what you asked for, but I would suggest a 20 gauge loaded with ammo designed to be low recoil, so long as it cycles reliably.

The reason I say that is that I don't think you'll find exactly what you're looking for. Also, if you choose to modify an existing semi-auto .410 shotgun by shortening the barrel, then you will probably run into cycling problems. Most .410 semi-autos are gas operated, so shortening the barrel will probably require enlarging the gas ports to make it operate properly. My point is that it's not worth the trouble, and you may never get the gun to run right.

I'm making a lot of assumptions here, but do you want a wooden stock so that it can be shortened? If I'm guessing correctly, then you could look at a youth/compact 20 gauge hunting shotgun. There may be some out there that have 22" barrels, which is fairly short.

Christ, where does your mom live that she needs a home defense shotgun? Get her that life alert thing I've seen on tv.

There's about a million more chances she'll fall and break a hip, then need an hd shotgun.

Have you looked at a Ruger PPC. Rem1100 measures at 47 3/4 inches while a Ruger PPC 9mm measures at 32-35.5 inches. Racking a Ruger PPC is lighter, and its a semi-auto as well. Recoil is manageable Not as bulky as Rem110 and easy to breakdown and store. Plus you get full 10 rounds.

My 20g semi-auto often jams with normal 7/8 loads let alone low recoil loads. It performs great with magnum loads.
