Need Help with Over/Under Shotgun - Won't fire consecutively

I have a Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon, 12 gauge. I've been shooting trap with it. I started shooting doubles, but the shotgun won't fire consecutively. The top barrel fires and the bottom won't fire.

So I switched the selector to fire the bottom barrel first and it worked fine. the bottom barrel fired and then the top barrel fired.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this?

Does it go click when you pull the trigger the second time?

I am interested in this. These are very reliable. To test it you can dry fire and then bump the butt of the gun on a hard surface to simulate the recoil.

Have you removed the stock to inspect the lockwork for any obvious debris or problem?

Tried bumping it on my knee. Still nothing. I have not removed the stock.

Good morning all. New member. Shot my first round of doubles Sunday and had trigger problems with the second shot - - didn't always fire. I thought it might be me not releasing the trigger fully but it wasn't. If I tickled the trigger the gun might fire by the time the target hit the ground...

            Take a look at post 13 thru 15 -

If you need me to pull the stock off mine (686sp1) and snap some pics for anything, let me know

My knees aren't hard enough to simulate the bump of a recoil. I bounce mine off the floor or table.

When you inspect the lockwork, I hope you post a close up photo of it.

Thanks guys. I'm not sure I want to disassemble it. I think I'd feel a bit more comfortable taking it to a smith.

I have a 20 gauge and a 12 gauge and just recently a shooting friend had the same problem. What happened to my two guns and my shooting friend's gun is the barrel selector gets in between positions. Meaning it may slide to the middle. When that happens, the gun won't shoot. Just a week ago the shooting buddy had this problem. He fired the first shot, but it wouldn't fire the second shot.

Once we determined the selector was in the middle and slid it to one side, the gun fired. It's very easy to inadvertently slide the switch when you use your thumb to open the action using the lever. It may rub on this switch and move it just enough to make it not fire.

It's not broken, but it's a problem if you rub that switch as you use the lever to open the action with your thumb. Just remember to always check that switch and you should be GTG.

Try Clothey & Sons Gunsmithing in Santee

They should be able to diagnose and fix it. Could be something as simple as cleaning.

I think most people fire the bottom barrel first anyway?

OK, that should work out well to take it to a shotgun gun smith.

Just FYI, the removal of the butt stock doesn't result in a bunch of scattered parts and may help you see if there is anything obvious.

From skimming over the link provided, the situation sounds like these are possible causes:

                        a. barrel selector switch not fully in position (shooter fix)
                        b. inertial spring issue (possible gunsmith fix)
                        c. plating peeling/bubbling or other internal burr part (possible gunsmith fix)
                        d. unknown, may be revealed by inspection

Best of luck with the gunsmith.

The shooting buddy's gun in this case was a 20/28 two barrel set. This is easy to check before sending it to a smith. I had this happen on my Zoli, which has a very similar barrel selector.

I tried it again. Bumped it on the floor, pretty hard. Still nothing. Top barrel fires, trigger locked when trying to fire bottom barrel.

Selector switch is definitely all the way to the side, not middle. Still won't snap.

I'm thinking of taking it to Duncan's Gun Works in San Marcos. Those old timers deal with a ton of shotties up there and they are reasonably priced.

I also sent a message to Beretta (English). Not expecting much directly from Beretta. But it can't help to alert them that I'm having this problem.

I've put 4-5,000 rounds through it in the last year. I've owned it for about one year.

Thanks for the info guys. Merry Christmas.
