    Pot Shooting

I just started pot shooting this week with a great group of shooters. It is a lot of fun.

Now I need to find/make more powerful shells to hit targets out 60-80 yards.

    What is "Pot Shooting"?

You also need to start saving some money, because you are likely to lose a lot if these guys are any good. The better pot shooters are shooting heavy loads of lead at 1700+fps and can nail targets at about 115 yards (sometimes).

It is a series of trap games where competitors try to shoot clays from extended distances.

For example, in one game we all lined up 30 yards away from the trap house. There were 12-15 shooters in line. Starting from the left, the first shooter has a chance to break the target out of the house. If they miss, the second shooter gets a shot. If they miss, the 3rd and so on until the clay target hits the ground.

By the 3rd or 4th shooter, the clay is out 70-80 yards.

You try to knock out the other shooters by hitting targets that they miss.

It is a double elimination with some shooters being "dirty" after getting a target broken that they missed. Details you will learn if you play.

There are several variations of this same concept. Sometimes you shoot from the left, the right, straight on, buddy shoots, etc.

Each game has a cost to get into ($3-$5) and the pot is won by the winner.

I played 10 games ($30) and won $16 in a buddy shoot so I kept my costs reasonable.

I definitely need bigger loads. I also need to figure out how much to lead a 60+ yard target moving at 42 mph.

We shoot into a hillside so the longest shots are 80-90 yards.

OMG that sounds like a ton of fun!! I wonder if LA Clays would allow these games on the trap field...

Is that a club only event? I live extremely close and am definitely looking for more shooting buddies!

Escondido is operating under COVID rules right now and only allows Members and Invited Guests to shoot for the time being.

Under normal circumstances, the public is invited to shoot trap on Tuesday mornings at 8:00 am, Wednesday afternoons at 5:00 and Saturday afternoons at 5:00.

If you are expecting to shoot a lot in the future, I would suggest becoming a member. Start the process soon because the waiting list has been 15-18 months recently.

That does sound like fun. What size shot is typically used? Most ranges limit to 7.5 shot.

Almost everyone here reloads. Since they just use one designated trap house, they can use 5 and 6 shot to hit the long shots.

The veterans have 3 different shells in their pouches, they switch them out depending on where they are shooting.

If they are first up, they might use factory shells since the shot is closer (30-40 yards). If they are second or third in line, they will have a more powerful shell to get out 50-60 yards. If they are fourth of fifth they use some longer range shells to reach 60-90 yards.
