    12ga Light Options

Lots of options for putting a light on my Mossberg 500.

I think mostly what I'm looking for is a bright *** light and excellent durability.

Tried and tested helps more than picking the most expensive model and hoping it lasts. I don't want something with parts that can't handle recoil.

What lights would some of you recommend for adding a light to a home defense shotgun?

    Thanks in advance!!

Surefire integrated weapon-light. The Mossberg shotgun will need the 7.75" forend, not the 6.75" forend. The forend will also need to be of the type where the wood or polymer grip is removed by unscrewing a nut. Not all Mossberg forends are designed with a removable grip portion.

On my shotguns, I've also used various types of Picatinny rail attachments. Onto the Pic rails, I've attached a regular handgun weapon-light, such as a Surefire X300 or Streamlight TLR-1.

    Surefire example:

    Streamlight example:

GG&G Mossberg 500 Light Mount example:
GG&G’s unique design of the Mossberg 500 flashlight mount provides an easy way to mount a tactical flashlight to your Mossberg 500.

and I've used the Safariland RLS mount, but using my own flashlights (usually Surefire brand) used in conjunction with a Picatinny rail:
Explore our duty holsters, concealment holsters, and optic-ready holsters. Find the perfect fit for Law Enforcement, Military, and First Responders.

All these options or configurations similar to these options have worked for me. Sometimes using my own flashlight with a Safariland RLS mount the flashlight needed to be shimmed in some fashion (I've used some type of tape) if the flashlight wasn't exactly the diameter needed for the RLS mount. I think the light needs to be ~1" in diameter.

Here's the RLS mount alone when using your own light:

EVERYTHING SUREFIRE SELLS IS TWICE WHAT IT SHOULD BE !!!

The reason for this is because they sell alot of stuff to the Military and thus have to charge more to deal with Govt BS. Unfortunately they can't just sell the same stuff for half price to civilians.

Streamlight is the same quality for less than half the price, and I have them on all my Carbines and HD and Tactical Shotguns Guns and even my Glock 21SF Bedroom gun.

Every once in a while they need a new battery.

As far as mounting on an M500 it is as simple as mounting a piece of Pic Rail on the Fore end.

You do have this type of fore end? Right?

This is what I put on my 12 gauge shotguns. an 870 with mag extension and a 500. The laser is junk, but the flashlight is really bright and battery is rechargeable. It clamps to the mag tube, I spun it up to side of barrel leaving a hair of clearance between it and the barrel and far enough forward not to smash my thumb when racking it. I don't use the pressure switch just push it on with my thumb. For $29.99 it is good deal for just the flashlight and the mount. I also like that it is single mode, just one push of the button it is on or off.

I just bought a Streamlight TLR-1 from Midway for my Mossberg 500. Will be mounted on a CDM GEAR ROC-12 Series Light Mount. Figure I can also put it on my AR or G17 if desired.

Yes you can move the light around,,, and that is the beauty of having a rail mounted light.

When I shoot my HD gun at a 3 gun shoot I take the light off. I also take it of my Tac Gun, and the Pistol and the Carbines,,, cuz you don't need it during the day! It only takes a second to take it off or put it back on.

Another benefit of the Streamlight products is the Treadle Switch on the rear of the light. Pushing on one side is Full On and it locks on,,, or the other way is Momentary Contact. Momentary Contact is the most used at night as you don't want the light on more than is necessary to identify a target and fire. If you leave it on while coming down to the ready after firing, you are tracing a path directly back to you for return fire. If you leave it on all the time you might as well be carrying a Coleman Lantern so everyone will know exactly where you are. So Momentary Contact is the preferred way of operating the light.

Believe me this setup is well thought out and tested and I have looked at other methods and many products.

AS far as Surefire,,, when they told me at the SHOT Show that they weren't really "that" interested in Civilian Sales and really only wanted Govt Contracts I was done with them. Complete Condescension.

I live in a Semi Rural Area near Ojai CA. We are outside the City Limits.

Typical response time for the Sheriffs is 20 minutes.

I have seen a Cougar walking down our street, and a Black Bear actually pooped in my Back Yard. Pets can't be outside at night or they get Ate! Lots of Wild Life comes thru our property at night and also during the day time.

That is not to mention the Tweakers and other Undesirables that drive thru looking for easy pickins'.

So yes, I am well armed, and actually know how to use most of what I've got effectively. Breaking into my house at night would be a serious mistake.

I'd say check out Olight.... Many options, I'm currently running a Valkerie Mini on my HD shotty... But the Odin mini is another great option 1200 lumens. M-lok or picatinny mounting options

I'm gonna go w/integrated forend on the shotgun. Love the TLR's for rifles and pistols though.

Thanks everyone for your input and guidance!!
