New KSG owner - pattern question

Shot my Keltec KSG for the first time yesterday. Looked at the pattern with the RSO. He mentioned that at 25 yards, my pattern was a bit wide. Does anyone have a choke they can recommend for the KSG?

Also, the range has skeet/clay shooting. I know nothing about clay shooting but would like to try it. Is using a KSG a douche bag move?

What ammo were you shooting? Any choke choice is going to depend on the ammo and the mission.

And yes, a KSG on the trap line would probably get a few eye rolls.

All clay sport ranges have minimum barrel length requirements and it's going to be more than your 18.5" KSG.

I was using target loads. Fiocchi 2 3/4, 1200fps, #8 shot. Will be for home defense.

Thanks for the opinion on the trap line. I was thinking it but wanted to be sure. Will get a Mossberg for trap shooting.

KSG is a bit of a rocket launcher but really fun to shoot!

Real questions- for home defense, how does it pattern with OO buck?

What is the longest shot possible in your home?

8 yards - 12 yards-15 yards

How does it pattern with OO at your longest interior range?


Is that a decent pattern for an HD gun?

Old school scattergun with cylinder bore was 1” per yard from the muzzle with OO buck

5 yards would give a 5” pattern.

10 yards -10” pattern


Someone created a flight control wad that held the shot together for a few more feet / yards. Federal purchased the patent on the flight control wad.


So the 10” pattern at 10 yards might be 5” with flight control

The damage of the shotgun is the brain being confused by multiple holes.

Besides the obvious physical damage of 8 -15 .32 cal holes in the body, the brain gets to try to do damage control. What is hurt? Where am I hurt? Should I constrict all blood vessels? Constrict veins or just arteries? Capillaries?


People get shot, fall, and sometimes get back into the fight as the brain and blood pressure stabilize.


One 3/4” hole is devastating.

9 .32 caliber holes all spaced 1-3” apart is a ton of damage.






Typically People stop attacks when-

Central nervous system goes off line - head shot

The structure is broken - bones - pelvis - shoulder- fall or can’t fight

Hydraulic leak- blood comes out so heart has nothing to pump - or heart cannot pump.

A shotgun with OO buck can cause all of the above.



Skeet / trap / birds- one does not focus on the gun nor the sights.

Home defense- sights are used

Unfortunately, they only allowed birdshot at the pattern board. No 00 buck as it would shred the 2x4s holding up the target. My hallway has a direct line of sight from the front door to the rear sliding door So roughly about 15 yards from both doors. I was able to get slugs and 00 buck surprisingly.

For the pattern board, I put up 3 splatter shot targets side by side. Aiming for the center target, it did seem that there was a horizontal distribution across all 3 targets with the right most target getting a lot more than the leftmost target. (I'll take a picture next time).

Thank you for the link! I saw the adapter that KelTec sells and I was researching the different chokes available. Just not sure what the basic chokes are and how they affect patterns. I guess I would probably want a more concentrated pattern focused on the center target. Else from the 15 yrd distance I'm shooting, most of the pellets would probably spray my living room furniture and not the intended target.

Ok, not a KSG, but my 20" Mossberg 500 patterns 00 five inches at 21 feet. All 9 holes covered by the palm of my hand.

You can find images on Google of KSG owners showing pictures of the buckshot patterns on paper. The images show that around 10-15 yards, the buckshot pattern is within a 8x11 piece of paper.

Shooting #8 pellets and concluding the buckshot pattern will match the #8 pattern is size is not correct. Pattern concentration and overall size will be different for each pellet size (and may be different for each barrel).

Very few trap and skeet clubs or sporting clays would allow ksg or any hd shotguns with barrel lengths less than 24-26". That is not a 25 yd shotgun.
Putting a screw in choke on it is like putting a bright ribbon on a jackass. That is a 15 yard hd shotgun.

At our range we use the chewed up 1x4s taken from repaired target stands (pistol shooters seem to do a number on wood too) which were already destined for the scrap heap, to hold the shotgun targets, and we just use a single vertical board. We staple cardboard to it hanging off to one side, so there is nothing behind, above, below, or to one side of the target. Basically like a flag.

Every range should be able to do this and should be saving their damaged wood pulled from target frames for this purpose.
