Rspar, to expand on Nihonto Chicken’s comment -

if you do replace or add another barrel, you’ll want to make sure it headspaces correctly and that there’s proper fit between the receiver extension and the receiver itself.

One of my Model 12s that I bought years ago had already gone past its last adjustment notch and is a little loose. I’ve been meaning to get a new collar but haven’t gotten around to it since it’s not the only model 12 I have. I have a spare ws1 skeet front end assembly that does fit the receiver, but it’s not quite a drop in fit and will need proper fitting too if I wanted to use it without hesitation.

While you may get lucky, simply buying a complete barrel or barrel assembly and throwing it on there is not as simple of an affair as switching barrels on an 870.

Nu-Line Guns stocks hard-to-find Winchester gun parts. Replacement parts for the Model 12, 101, 100 & Super X1 and more, with schematics to find the exact fit.

I think that people are making it out to be harder to install a Model 12 barrel than it really is. I did it a few months back when I decided to make a hunting barrel assembly for my M12 Trench Gun. I should have bought it as an assembly and then adjusted it to fit my receiver, but as is usual with me I chose to assemble it from parts. What I wound up with is a plug and play barrel assembly so that if I choose to hunt with it all I have to do is remove the barrel shroud, break it down like normal and pop the hunting barrel assembly on.

I have about $250 in the extra front end. Not exactly cheap, but I like doing projects like this and with prices of shotguns around here being what they are, it is still less money than what another shotgun would cost.

The guy I purchased my model 12 from said its luck of the draw. The extra barrel assembly he bought fit without any issues. His other model 12 upper (he had 2) would not fit on the one I purchased. He recommended a company that sells a kit to make a barrel assembly work but it was something he recommended a gunsmith do.

The link is the company recommended (I think) the seller of my model 12.

I got a very clean 1954 Model 12 a couple years ago for $350, It also had a barrel a mile long. I figure there are plenty out there with long field barrels, and since I had no use for a 30" barrel, I chopped it to 18.5" and re-beaded it. I also tossed the old buttpad and fitted a repro plastic buttplate.

Mine was a solid rib, yours is a no-rib which makes the chop a no-brainer IMO.

Sorry not sorry. This is exactly what I wanted in a Model 12...

Skyhawk .. That's very sweet, all business and no frills. I've got a chopped down, solid rib, and refinished Model 12 too. They rack so smooth.

Thanks! Yeah they are very nice shotguns. I chopped mine with a hacksaw and squared it off with a barrel facing tool. Luckily the cutting surface of the tool was big enough to also square up the solid rib at the same time. I love the look of the solid rib! The rib also made locating the top center line of the barrel a snap when it came to drilling & tapping for the new bead.

Don't cut the barrel. Don't ruin Grandpa's shotgun. Just go out and get yourself a home defense shotgun at one of the big box stores or something. It's probably going to cost you less in the end anyway. There's always room for another firearm.

By the way, if you ever want to sell that I would be a cash buyer. Hopefully you're in the Bay Area.
