Small games, and a budget of $1000. Your options are wide open.

Recommendations from an NRA certified shotgun instructor:
1.) go to a trap or skeet range and try a few different types of shotguns and see what you like.

2.) try to stick with known gauges like the 20 gauge or the 12 gauge for ammo availability and selection. Using oddball calibers like 10 gauge, 24 gauge and 16 gauge will limit your ability to obtain ammunition. In addition, the 12 gauge will put more pellets down range increasing your changes of a hit over smaller gauges.
2.1) order of precedence for selecting ammunition:
        2.1.1) 12 gauge or 20 gauge
2.1.2) 28 gauge (Smaller in payload capacity (less pellets) and difficult to find ammo for)
2.1.3) 410 gauge (Smallest in payload capacity, less common, and is considered an experts shotgun due to the small payload.)
2.1.4) 16 gauge or 10 gauge (Difficult to find ammunition for)

3.) try using a semiauto shotgun to reduce felt recoil. (If recoil sensitive)

        Great question and good luck.
        Best regards,

For a hunting shotgun, get something lightweight .
Also, for small game, 20 gauge is fine in my opinion. And lighter!

There are some nice beretta semi-auto’s in that price range like a A300 or used A400. Or a browning A5.
Or a used over/under like a Miroku or Browning Citori. Or even a nice Remington 870 wing master pump action.

20g Benelli Montefeltro. That's my choice anyways.

Though I use less 20g now with non-tox.
