    Rooster Ranch - Hilmar CA

Hi Folks, I wanted to report on my first day out shooting the Benelli Supernova today.

I went to a range called Rooster Ranch, located in Hilmar, about 35 miles south of Tracy, CA. I have some rifle and pistol experience but am a beginning shotgunner, so I was looking to start out shooting trap and develop my technique. Mike, the owner of Rooster Ranch, connected me with Ron (also of Rooster Ranch) who is a very experienced shotgun sports enthusiast. Ron worked with me over the course of about two hours!

I shot four rounds of trap at a very leisurely (educational setting) pace, Ron set up a station just for me and stayed with me the whole time, even though I had no such expectation when I headed out there. He is clearly a generous person with his time and really enjoys helping people learn. Ron is a soft-spoken, older gentleman and very very patient...He was able to convey a lot of the nuances of shooting, and we tried many different stations/positions relative to the trap house so I could get a good mix of targets.

By the end of the day I was breaking about half of my birds, the ones where I really hit them directly were very satisfying (especially when Ron would say "There you go! ...You dusted that one!"

Also shooting over at the next station was Scott and his son, Chase, who also had some good pointers (Thanks Guys!)

Ron also helped me to pattern my gun and we found the Benelli to be dead-on. One comment that Ron made (he took a few trap shots with it) was that he found the trigger pull to be somewhat distracting (too strong) and suggested having it looked at for possibly getting a lighter spring setup.

After 100 shells, I was getting a bit tired (a lot of new/different muscles being used, for sure!) and by around noontime it was getting up into the high 90's, so I packed it in. I also had made the mistake of using 1 and 1/8 oz #8 shells which were more powerful than needed. Ron recommended 7/8 oz, for next time!

I can't say enough about the great folks and friendly atmosphere at this place, and that made being a first-timer a GREAT experience. There were probably around 10-12 other folks out shooting the various games (they have trap, skeet, 5-stand (even lighted 5-stand for night shooting) and sporting clays. I will definitely be going back to Rooster Ranch again real soon.

I've been to Rooster Ranch, and you're right, it's a good place.
