Ben Avery CTC: It was fun, it was hot, it was really fun, it was REALLY HOT!!!
It had a fun factor of 178 !!!
I've said this before, and I'll say it again, if you've never shot a tournament in AZ, you really owe it to yourself to try one. These guys "get it."
Today was Ben Avery Clay Target Center's monthly registered shoot. BACTC is just north of Phoenix, and since I was there for the NRA convention anyway, it was easy to put this on my schedule.
Dan "60 yard teal" Twitchell is the man behind Ben Avery (that doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean), and he does a great job. Today's tournament had 65 shooters, ran well, had water on the course, and we were done in two hours and fifteen minutes. This is kind of an important thing when you're shooting in the desert.
I had the pleasure of shooting with a great squad that included Norma (welcome to B class) Friedman and her husband Chip. What a nice bunch of people. We all had a good laugh when Norma "accidentally" hit the horn on the golf cart just as Chip was about to pull the trigger.
Dan does a great job of setting the targets, and even though the course is laser flat, you'd never know it by the target presentations.
I could go on and on about how much fun I had today, but instead I'll say this: start thinking about planning a trip here for next spring. When you're standing butt deep in snow, I guarantee it will be 70 and sunny here. When you add in world class golf, Indian Casinos, Spring Training baseball, and Ray's Pizza and Wings, you've got the makings of a great winter get away.
Oh, and the fun factor? That's easy, I just add the ambient temperature to my score, and I get the fun factor.
"So Brad, what you're saying is that you shot a 102 today, and the temp was a pleasant 76". Ummm, ahhh, sure, what ever you say.
P.S. Norma edged me out by four birds to take "C" class, but I still came in fourth place and won $36.
