Not entirely that qualifies as a shotgun "round"... other than it's fired FROM a shotgun.

I anxiously await the civilian version!

I think he meant "First Firearm," and basically it was.

Beretta Started making barrels in the early 1500's . They already had rockets but they were hit and miss.

The Modern Shotgun, whether it is a Sporting Arm or a Tactical Weapon is the most versatile weapon there is.

No matter what the actual configuration of the gun is (Single Barrel, Double Barrel, Pump, Semi Auto) the fact that it can use many different types of Ammunition makes it adaptable to many uses, and no other weapons system can say that.

I personally load .410 and 12 ga. The .410's are mostly shot but I also have slugs I can run up to 1750 fps which puts my M6 Scout at .357 from a rifle power level also buckshot for defensive rounds although a .410 would not be my preferred gun for self defense.

with 12 ga most shot shells are loaded with #8's for Trap and Skeet and bird hunting. I just loaded 25 rounds of Buckshot yesterday for use in my 3 gun shoots.

I have about 6-8 different slugs I can load to whatever level I choose. They range from .662 round balls, Lee Drive Key Slugs (1.oz.) to Lyman Pellet Slugs, to BPI Slugs (1 1/8 oz.) to my Non Toxic Slugs at 1 1/4 oz or some store bought Brenneke and Lightfield Slugs which are powerful enough for anything on earth.

Thus, you can see I'm covered from Clays to Doves to Pheasants and Ducks to Pigs, Deer, bears and ? I have seen little missile looking projectiles that are all machined parts with fins that deploy at launch and will blow a 4' diameter hole in a Cement Wall. Yesterday I just saw a New Taser Round that gives you a 100 yard Range to deal with those who won't give up!. and there are also Rubber Bullets and Bean Bags used for crowd control.

All of tehse can be launched by most any shotgun (Cylinder Bore!!!)

It should be noted that the Brown Bess Musket .75 cal smoothbore, was the Standard Issue Firearm for the British Empire from 1720 to 1830, and has probably killed more things than any other Firearm in history.

It should also be noted that the term "Round" that we use to describe our ammunition now,,, came from the Round Balls fired from that gun.

If you haven't gotten into shotguns you have missed out on lots of fun.

Rule #2 Whatever they accuse you of, they are already doing.
Rule #3 Liberals lie about anything no matter how insignificant.
Rule #4 If all else fails, they call you a Racist!

It's not how well you do what you know how to do,,, It is how well you do what you don't know how to do.

            I concur OP,
I just want to add besides their somewhat of an early start firearms history and the extremely wide variety of loads that can be fired from them ...
In my humble opinion they are the best bang for the modern buck.

For around a few hundred dollars you can get a nice/ functioning / reliable pump shotgun like a Mossberg or a used Remington 870 that will give you a lifetime and more of service.

I'm not sure you can get Mossberg two-barrel combos anymore for $200, on sale, like you used to but I'm think you can get a foreign made pump shotgun for around that price if you can only afford that much.

When you compare those type of prices to Most modern handguns or any semi-automatic rifle, it's a great option for people needing to spend less but wanting to shoot a larger variety of ammo and possibly a variety of targets as well.

First firearm? The Spanish arquebus was used to help defeat the heathen Aztecs some 200 years before the invention of the shotgun.
