    Semi auto shotguns

Any suggestions on budget semi auto shotguns? Are the AK style ones still legal?

CA assault weapons laws for shotguns requires semi-auto shotguns to operate with a fixed magazine [PC 30515(a)(7)] that can not be removed without disassembling the firearm's action or that is permanently attached in the firearm's magazine well [PC 30515(b)].

        Therefore...

        1. A semi-auto AK style shotgun with a fixed magazine is CA legal.

        2. A manully operated (straight pull bolt-action) repeating AK style shotgun is CA legal.

        3. A manually operated (striaght pull bolt-action) single-shot AK style shotgun is CA legal.

*repeating = has a magazine capacity.
*single-shot = does not have a magazine capacity, cartridges are loaded/unloaded directly from the firearm's chamber.

        Penal Code 30515
        (a) Notwithstanding Section 30510, “assault weapon” also means any of the following:
        (6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
        (A) A folding or telescoping stock.
        (B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
        (7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
        (8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.
        (b) For purposes of this section, “fixed magazine” means an ammunition feeding device contained in, or permanently attached to, a firearm in such a manner that the device cannot be removed without disassembly of the firearm action.

I bought a Hatsan Escort semi automatic 20 guage shotgun gun from Big 5 a few years back for about $350. I have put about 100 rounds through it. It's been been flawless with #3 and 4 buck shot. Does not feed #7 and 8 bird shot very well which is okay with me since it's meant for home defense. A 20 guage semi automatic is what I wanted since I have a bad shoulder from a motorcycle crash. It's has a very mild kick with Federal Premium 2 3/4 #3 ammo. I can also shoot it accurately from down low on my side very fast. It's not a prestigious brand, but it gets good reviews and I am satisfied with it.

                  What's your budget?
IMHO the best bang for your buck is the Remingtin V3 or Versamax they are extremely reliable, require very little cleaning/ maint and are very soft shooting even heavier loads. Many say its recoil is milder than 20ga guns.

Dehorn/polish the bolt catch/bolt hold open mechanism and run 3 1/4 DRAM shells if you get one. Lube with oil in winter and white lithium grease in summer.

How did you perform the fixed mag on it? I have one myself and just installed a maglatch puck

Check out the Stoeger M3000 Freedom Series. Stoeger is part of the Benelli firearms group. I have the Stoeger M3500. Been using it the past 7 years for dove, pheasant and duck hunting without a single malfunction.
