Just buy a Mos500 with a cantilever rifled barrel.
      Very accurate.
Smooth barrel anyways is not going to make any accurate shots, especially, there are no good lead-free slugs for smoothbore, only sabots for rifled.

I've found the barrel cost is almost as much as the gun, I went with a whole new gun instead. unless you find a deal on a slug barrel.

but to answer question, you should use sights not a scope for a shotgun. I can't remember if my A300 was drilled and tapped or not but My mossberg 500 was, my A40 is as well. In fact so are all my shotguns so I assume the A3000 should be as well.

Are you talking about Mos500 rifled barrel?
It can be had for about $100 in good condition, plus used Mos 500 easily can be found for 150 or less. Plus a scope and you have a great setup to up to 250 yards.
If you want to go with semy, mos 930 has also and rifled cantilever barrels. A little bit pricy tho.

I don't remember if a300 has a rifled barrel option, but i might be wrong.

I have a Beretta a300 - not a gun I would scope. Rem V3 is easy to scope, as is an 870.

What game and opportunities? Slug hunting in CA is not super common.

My Non Toxic Slugs were designed mainly for Pig Hunting. They are "Certified" for use in CA by Fish and Wildlife. But you'd have to load them yourself as I can't offer Loaded Ammo. My slugs are designed for a Rifled Barrel and yield very good accuracy but still you aren't wise to shoot beyond 100 yards. They still shoot decent in a smoothbore, but your range will be more limited.

I use open sights on my guns as I'm not shooting beyond those limits.

It ain't that hard you put the powder in, then slide the slug in, then roll crimp the hull closed.

Just so you know you must have your gun plugged so it only holds two rounds in the magazine. Just like for Bird Hunting. Just cut a 3/8-1/2" dowel 5 1/2" long.

Check out the Savage 210 and 220. If your looking for a dedicated slug gun to use for hunting, that would be my first choice. The trigger is better than you will find on most shotguns, it's designed to be used with a scope and is very accurate with lead free sabot slugs.

California has very limited usage for dedicated slug gun, and while Savage 210 and especially 220 are very good tools, IMO it is waste to have a dedicated slug gun in CA, therefore my suggestion is Mos500 with a huge selection of various barrels which makes it the most versatile HD/Hunting platform for ANY situation.

Several of California’s Military bases have areas designated for shotgun / muzzle loader and archery hunting only. There are also some wildlife management areas that allow deer or pig hunting and have shotgun only requirements.
