    What is the max range...

...for OO Buck shot? I have a Mos 500 for home defense and know OO Buck is more than sufficient for the job. But what if the situation spilled out into the street? Then what? How far will I be able to "reach out and touch someone"?

I think it depends upon your choke.

Wide open, cylinder/open, I'd say is 25 yards, though the pellets may fly for 100 yards or more.

With a tight choke, I'd say 50 yards.

40 yards easy out of a full choke and with a tight enough (Turkey, etc) choke 60 yards. Even one .33 caliber pellet will ruin someone's day.

The best thing to do is use the buckshot in the house and if the fight spills out into the street stay inside and protect yourself.

Another option is to have 2-3 rounds of 00 buck loaded and fill the rest of the magazine with slugs.

I've heard of only one instance in which a suspect was brought down by buckshot at about 65 yards. Through a cylinder bore, I don't think I'd trust buckshot past 30 yards.

You should ask the question to hunters in the Southeast and Midwest.

(dont mean to jack the op's thread, just add to it)

what kinda range do you think you could get with a slug gun?

I know long range clay shooters get out past 50-60 yards with #4 and #6 shot...I wouldn't want to catch a flurry of 00 at 70-80 yards.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want to get into combat with a person who had a rifle at 100 yds and you having a SG, but handgun or less at long range vs 00 buckshot...I'd be ok with that.

If it spills out to the street in most cases you'd be best to check up. They aren't a threat and you would be the one in jail.

I've hit a man size target at about 200 yards with a slug.....it penetrated 1" mohogany slab of wood. That was the 3rd or 4th shot mind you...had to find the range point shooting.

When I was instructing police and security types years ago we would have a shotgun drill at 40 yards. Two rounds of 00 buck and two slugs. Most cylinder bore shotguns would deliver six or seven 00 pellets on the B-27 target at that range (some would deliver all nine). Slugs, of course, would deliver all on the target when the students got their aiming correct. (man, I love rifle sights on a shotgun).

But here is an opinion, 40 yards is quite a long distance for a fight, especially one that started close-in. It should give you opportunity to consider your options more carefully so you don't, as pointed out in another post, end up being the one going to jail.

My amateur opinion would be <30 yards for lethality and I'd have to agree with the other about if the fight "spilled out into the street" that you shouldn't be out there too.

For home protection I'd be more worried about the rounds traveling too far as they may fly through neighbors walls, though I live in an apartment.

Max lethal range is about 300 yards but good luck hitting what you aim at.

Max effective range is about 50 yards.....but throw in a slug and you have a rifle good out to over 100 yards.
