    Benelli M4 stock mod.

There have been some sentiment on some forums and even the Benelli forum that the LOP on the M4 is made for chimps. In that the stock is very long and it snags on clothes as it's brought up.

Or for those of you wearing body armor, it makes it even longer and more difficult to get good purchase on the gun.

As far as training it out, well, I'm sure you can make a conscious effort to pull the gun way out to avoid snagging clothes, but this wastes prescious seconds in a moment when you really need to use a shotgun.

So, I cut my stock in a miter box. I mad foam dams countoured to the inner stock at both ends to contain Marine Tex epoxy.

I filed the dried epoxy and stock and put on a thin Remington butt pad.

Total reduction in stock approx. 2.5 inches, and much easier shouldering......

The tape is not stretched, so total overall length is 36.5 inches

I might just try that if I ever get another PG stock. Nice work.

Nice mod, Tonight I have been planning on shortening my stock as well. What a coincidence that I see this here right before I go to bed

I am going a different route but will keep this in mind in case I run into issues

Nice looks great. Now I just have to go buy the M4 to make this happen.

nice work. looks like it came like that from the factory.

Could you explain a little more clearly what you did, and why?

Not too many youth shotguns come in 12 GA so I was getting turned off by the 14" LOP on a synthetic 870 but if this'll work on any synthetic stock I'd love to get a ~13" LOP.

This is the overall completed pic..........

                  1) Use circular, reciprocating or hand saw. Chop off stock to length you desire. Remember new buttpad may erase some of your work if too thick. I used the thinnest Remington and spacer.

                  2) Clean up your work with fine sand paper.

                  3) Rough up inner stock at both distal ends, leaving an opening in the middle of the buttstock to access the nut inside the stock. I used a dental pick and made many XXX patterns. Or use 80 grit sand paper.

                  4) Clean inside with Acetone. Not alcohol

                  5) Get Marine Tex putty or Devcon 10110. I did a LOT of research before selecting the epoxy. These are the only two to use. I used Marine Tex.

                  6) Build dams to contain the putty. I used 1/4 inch foam from the hobby store and a wire foam cutter. Shape dams to contain the viscous/thick putty. I made my dams slightly larger than the inner distal ends of the stock. You want a friction fit. The dams that prevent the putty from going deeper into the stock I made long enough to rest on the nut/recoil tube. So it has friction support when in contact with the stock and mechanical support on the end that rests on the recoil tube nut.

                  7) Make another foam dam that sits parrallel to the recoil tube/nut to contain the putty.

                  8) Mix the Marine Tex. Use a disposable plastic pic-nic spoon.

                  9) Take spoon and put putty into dammed areas. They should be about an inch cubed in volume. Let the putty drop from the spoon into the dammed areas to eliminate voids and trapped air pockets.

                  10) Let dry 2 days

                  11) Use a 80 grit electric hand sander. I find this best because it has a flat surface and will grind down your work, the epoxy and stock, evenly vs hand sanding. Mine was the cheapest home depot had, $20. Use the 80n grit to rough sand down the stock. Then use finer grits to smooth.

                  12) Rough shape the Remington pad and spacer to your stock shape.

                  13) Drill holes into the epoxy to match the length of the new buttpad screws. I used a bit that was ALMOST as long and thick as the screw.

                  14) Affix new rubber pad and spacer. Mask off Benelli stock to prep for grinding down the new pad.

                  15) Using a belt sander, drill sanding disc or the electric hand sander, grind/sand down the new Remington buttpad and spacer.

                  16) Celebrate being done with beer and steak from Wood Ranch BBQ

                  17) Go shoot and rejoice in the ease of shouldering the weapon. Don body armor and rejoice in the ease of shouldering said weapon w/o snapping or going through an overexaggerated motion of moving the gun waaaaay far away to clear the armor.

PM me if any questions. The hardest part I found was getting the guts to do it.

Length of pull as measured from the center of the trigger guard to the middle of the pad is 12.5 inches.

To me, perfect for quick, shouldering in short ranges.

To compare, my AR in it's longest adjustment of the stock is 13.5 inches.

My Long range rifle is 14 inches.

How tall are you?...I wear body armor and have no trouble shouldering with it. I have heard people of shorter stature have trouble with it.

It fits me now that's all that matters. I'm of average US height and weight.

If there's no trouble with you, then you can disregard the post. This post is for people who feel it's too long.

Call me Cheatah mine fits fine as is. Nice job by the way.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I'm not sure which recoil pad to get now. Any suggestions?
For comfort and without any mechanical aids, Limbsaver. It's one of the best and cheap too.

For mechanical adjustment and mechanical recoil control, I had the Knoxx comp stock and it really does work. Had it on my 1187 and 870.

Now I just have the thinnest, hard rubber Remington on my B.
