Because of CA assault weapons laws, semi-auto shotguns must operate using a fixed magazine.

Fixed magazine = ammunition feeding device that is contained in the firearm and can not be removed without disassembling the firearm's action or is permanently attached in the firearm's magazine well.

Modifications to make them CA legal must be done before they are imported into CA.

With the current nationwide panic buying on firearms/ammo/etc due to the pandemic, supply is short and demand to make them CA legal for the CA market is a low priority.

You can put up a Want To Buy ad, but maybe hold off until the panic dies off unless you want to pay the Covid Fee.

      (Current record: $2K Gen. 5 Glock 19.)
      Edit:
      Has an "I'll take it".
If real, buyer is either LEO or willing to drive from Sacto to LA.
      Wow.

No such thing as a featureless shotgun?

No such thing as featureless for semi-auto shotguns.
Yes on featureless for manually operated shotguns and single-shot shotguns.

Being semi-auto and not having a fixed magazine is a restricted feature, regardless of what other features the semi-auto shotgun may have. [PC 30515(a)(7) and 11 CCR 5471(a)]

            Penal Code 30515
            (a) Notwithstanding Section 30510, “assault weapon” also means any of the following:
            (6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
            (A) A folding or telescoping stock.
            (B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
            (7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
            (8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.
            (b) For purposes of this section, “fixed magazine” means an ammunition feeding device contained in, or permanently attached to, a firearm in such a manner that the device cannot be removed without disassembly of the firearm action.

California Code of Regulations Title 11 Divison 5 Chapter 39 Article 1 Section 5460
The definitions of terms in section 5471 of this chapter shall apply to the identification of assault weapons pursuant to Penal Code section 30515.

California Code of Regulations Title 11 Divison 5 Chapter 39 Article 2 Section 5471
            (a) “Ability to accept a detachable magazine” means with respect to a semiautomatic shotgun, it does not have a fixed magazine.

Where are you located? I bought a VR80 last month and changed out the stock and grip. It's a blast to shoot. Triple A's in Vallejo has them and you can also get them from a Sportsman Warehouse. If you order one from Sportsman just make sure you order the Cali version.

Their CA variant had a "bullet button" style magazine release that required a tool to remove the tubular magazines and it was CA legal from 2011-2016.

Starting 01-01-2017, it became a CA assault weapon and if you owned one before 2017, you had to register it as an assault weapon before 07-01-2018 or dispose of it out-of-state or render it permanently inoperable or surrender it to law enforcement for destruction.

Because the tubular magazines can be removed without disassembling the firearm's action, it no longer meet's CA definition of a fixed magazine and are considered assault weapons. [PC 30515(a)(7)]

It's my understanding that the rotary mags can not be removed on the CA version... it has a door/release to load the tube, rotate & load, repeat

I have the standard version... but I checked out the CA version on their site - you should too.

"Our California compliant version has a magazine lock release that requires a tool to remove and attach the magazine."

Before 2017, this met CA's defintion of a fixed magazine, making it CA legal.
After 2016, this meets CA's new definition of a detachable magazine and no longer meets CA's new definition of a fixed magazine, making it CA illegal.

I could have sworn I saw a version with fixed mag and a door/flap (I dont know what else to call it) on the feed side of the rotary mag (right hand side)... the door lifts open, feed four, rotate mag and repeat.

I'll have to search ... I'm pretty damn sure I didnt dream it. Might be something I'd dream up if I still lived there - but I'm positive I saw the thing on their site, or one of their vids... I'll try to find it.
