Remington 870 Express, jamming upon extraction.

I purchased one of these in January and have fired roughly 500-600 rounds through it. Since new, I've had a problem, after firing when I go to eject the spend casing I can't rack the slide back easily. Sometime it takes a considerable amount of force. I've tried several different types of rounds and have had two friends experience the same thing (with my gun). It's not just hard to pull the handle back, it's like it gets hung up on something because it won't move back at all, until I coax it enough and it "breaks free".

Additionally, I've fired the rounds from the same boxes out of my friends shot guns and haven't had any problems.

This wouldn't be a big deal if it only happened a couple of times, but I'd say it happens 10-20% of the time. So out of a box of 25 shells it will happen 4-5 times.

My friend was in a Turners and he said a guy walked in with the same problem on his 870, only he wasn't even able to get the casing out, so he walked into the store with a loaded weapon

Anyone heard of any problems with these guns? I thought these were supposed to be one of the best, inexpensive shotguns out there, but I'm not impressed.

I've visually inspected and don't see anything that could be causing the hang up and I thoroughly cleaned the gun, nothing seems to matter though.

I may have to send this into Remington, but WTF, not only will I be without the thing for who knows how long, but it's going to cost me to do this!

I own two 870 wingmasters and one 870 express and have never had a problem ejecting.
It's only four months old, Remington should fix it free of charge. I'd send it back.

if it is an express model, you almost surely will benefit from a chamber polishing and a couple of hundred more shells thru it. Don't waste money to return it.

btw, if it really gets jammed like the other guy you wrote about, you just slam the buttstock on the recoil pad against the ground (while holding the fore-end) kind of hard and it pops right out.

I am no expert, but I have a brand new 870 Express and experienced a couple of tight shells after firing. 3 or 4 out of about 75 shells. They were all the WINCHESTER Universal bulk pack light target loads (i.e. Walmart bulk pack). I have read multiple threads over at SHOTGUNWORLD.COM that this happens quite often. Head on over there and take a look at cheap fixes and others experiences before losing confidence in the gun. They all ejected with a little muscle from my massive biceps and ripped forceps and having a washboard ab mid-section might help too. Plus I am super super good looking. So, hope this helps.
My brother in law has a brand new 870 Express and he has not had the problem at all with the same loads. He can't hit sh*t with it and he is a dumb as a stick but, his gun works good. Go figure.

Mine did that when it was new and got hot, the shell would stick in the chamber. Only way the shell would eject was to let the barrel cool or pump it hard by two-handing the forend and slamming the butt on the floor.

Shotgunworld and THR have posts with guys who used a brake cylinder hone or steel wool to smooth the chamber. I wrapped 0000 steel wool around a foot long piece of 1/2" dowel, chucked it into the drill and polished the chamber and forcing cone in the barrel for about 10 minutes, using Rem Oil as a lube. Then cleaned the barrel real good.

Afterwards, I shot 100 rounds of Winchester value pack at the trap range and then 200 rounds in a defensive class with no problems. The gun eats Winchester and Remington value pack ammo just fine now, but Federal value pack ocaissionally stove pipes.

Cheap ammo uses "low brass" hulls. Try using "high brass" ammo and I bet you won't have any problems.

If you insist on using "low brass" ammo, polish the chamber as others have suggested.

yeah i had the same problem, i just kept on shooting and kept it well lubed.

a gunsmith explained it to me as the shell would expand with a dirty chamber and stick to the sides

I saw Dondo and his brother in law out at Prado the other day, great guys. His brother in law is an amazing trap shooter. Other people stopped shooting just to watch him. Dondo got all mad and stormed off! Anyway back on topic, look for Max100 threads/posts he has lots of good info/fix's for your problem.

I just got back from shooting my 870 Express Left hand model. I only shot two rounds of trap with no problems. So far I have only shot reloads in the gun though.

Don't listen to this tool. The fact is, every shooter there was mesmerized by my golden caramel tan and piercing blue eyes. It was almost embarrassing. I was shooting 30 out of 25. I am that good. Thats while drinking Martinis and using the cell phone to trade stocks.

I had the exact same problem with one of my Ithaca 37's. This thing worked like a charm. Make sure you order some honing oil with it.
