    Remington 1100 won't cycle 2 3/4 shells

So I inherited a 70's model 1100 shotgun. The receiver is stamped magnum along with the barrel which has one gas port. I assume it's only designed to cycle the 3" shells. Cleaned it up and oiled it good and changed the O ring but and took her out and only had cheap walmart target loads. Buddy has an 1100 not magnum and it cycled fine but not mine. Was basically a single shot when I was out there. I see a lot of standard 2 3/4 barrels on eBay and gunbroker and I assume they have an extra gas port and this might solve the problem.

Did you clean the gas ports?

My 1100 cycles any 2-3/4 I put in it, from Winchester AA to cheap Wally World bulk packs. Both my barrels(26" Skeet choked, and 30" screw-in choke) are 2-3/4 only though...

Was out a while ago at Comanche Hills, and my buddy had issues with his Mossberg semi-auto cycling cheap Winchester white box bulk pack; worked fine in my 1100.

I do see in the gas ports, and clean, residue from cheaper shells.

You are correct with your last statement. The 1100 Magnum is not designed to shoot 2 3/4" shells. It will probably work with heavier loads, but the light stuff will not function. A 2 3/4" barrel with proper gas ports will do the trick.

That's what I figured. I remember my dad when I was a kid always saying this thing didn't cycle well unless we use the 3" shells. Found the receipt from 1975 and the damn thing is beautiful. Time to look for a different barrel

Can you add one more 1/16” gas port?

Those o-rings are available from McMaster-Carr for about $9.55 for bag of 50.
I got a bag 5 years ago; have only used a few. Gave some to some Cal Gunners. Still have a bunch.

Based upon my experience with a small bore 1100 3" gun, the answer is probably "yes." I had Bob Day drill out the gas port so that I could use short field and target shells, and the gun works perfectly. The downside is that if you want to use 3" shells with the drilled barrel, the gun will beat itself up if you shoot enough of the 3".

I change mine twice a year with a little light oil.

I get mine from the local hydraulics shop. Be sure you get Viton...standard rubber rings from HD or similar self destruct quick. Amhik

...and while the gun beats itself up, it beats the livin' crap out of the shooter.

If you never hunt water fowl, should not be a big deal. I've got 20" turkey choked barrel that won't cycle half the time on 2-3/4" loads. A new barrel with the correct holes may be less $$$ than having the holes drilled, though it's not a major diy with the right bits.

If the gun is stamped "magnum" it can be either 12 or 20 ga.

I'd guess 12, as 3" shells in 20 are not nearly as common as 3" shells in 12 ga...but same solutions...drill larger gas holes or get another barrel. Personally, I'd go with the barrel. Hoosier gun works may have a barrel.

I have the exact same gun and “problem”. They’re meant for faster/ heavier loads that you would normally see in hunting loads.. I’ve found that mine won’t cycle with 2 3/4 inch loads unless the ammo is rated at 1300 FPS or faster.
