If it’s the parkerized version, keep it well lubricated.

I had mine cerakoted. No issues with rust

I put a mossy oak wrap on my sons duck gun, it came out looking good.

The 870 Express is not parkerized, it's finished in black oxide, which rusts just a bit slower than bare steel. Paste wax like you'd use on a hardwood floor works well.

My friends’ 870 hates the cheaper aluminium Winchester and federal shells. It jams up after a couple shots and you can’t eject until it cools off a couple minutes. Hopefully that upgraded ejector helps.

The more you shoot it, the smoother the action gets. I’d also wipe it down with oil after you use it(I use the slip2000 wipes or the breakfree wipes) to keep the rust off. I also changed the stock front sight bead to a fiber optic one. Other than that you’re good to go. And as far as ammo, I used to shoot whatever cheap bulk pack I could find with no problems. Now all I shoot is the winchester xpert steel when dove hunting.

Keep it well lubed and shoot it - a lot!

I rattle can mine to keep it from rusting, especially if you take it out in the field. I got one stock and one rattle canned. It really helps. They are rust magnets. Spend your money on some decent choke tubes from Carlson’s and put some time into patterning the gun. And get a sling. It’s nice for a field gun if you do upland.

Put a movie on and spend time cycling the action to help smooth out. Apply oil as needed. You can save yourself the time and just polish up the action bars too. Either than that, have fun and stay safe!!!

I have an 870 Express that is nearly 20 years old, bought new by me, and has no sign of corrosion. But I don't hunt and it hardly ever rains in So. Cal so take that with a grain of salt. I have shot it a lot though and it gets smoother over time. I think it is a fine shotgun for $300 or so.

Polish the chamber a bit with steel wool on a dowel or brush and a hand drill.

The old ones are nice. The new ones are the rust buckets. Just the oil from your hands will do it. I wouldn’t bother polishing it. Just clean, oil and go shoot a few rounds of trap.

+100 It is the only two things you need. Polish the chamber (many vids on youtube) and after cleaning the gun rub your oily hands over metal parts. It will keep it till your grandson is old enough to use it.

Give the chamber a good polish and you'll be good. Some of them had a rough finish on the chamber a quick run with some polish and a felt pad on a dremel works wonders.

You have the best selling shotgun in the world and it's still around for good reason.
