Check out the Stoeger Condor line. I got the 20 ga. version for painless all day shooting and they can be had new for about $350.

Good luck. You'll be hard pressed to find an O/U for less than $400 (new or used). There was one on here a year or so ago, a Boito for $150 or so, but they're not very highly regarded.

Your best bet would be a new Stoeger Condor which sells in the $375-$425 range. Or Big 5 carries the Remington SPR 310 for $469. I have one and it's a great shooting gun.

Stay away from an o/u that sells for that price - they will give you problems. if you are serious about shotguns then try to find a used Browning Citori - they are great O/U entry level guns. If you're not sure about wanting to buy one, go to a range that rents them to get yourself sure, that way you save yourself the headache of buying a POS O/U that will give you problems.
For around 1000 you can get a gun that will stand up to lots of trips to the range or the field, and won't create many trips to the gunsmith...that's a far more realistic number for getting into an O/U.
Good luck - it's a nasty disease once you catch it - I have about 10 and 5-6 SxS's now as well...And trust me, they'll be much more expensive as the disease spreads.

I have a Remington Spartan O/U and it has been completely reliable for hunting and trap/skeet. I love the snobs that dismiss anything under a grand. Go to gunbroker. Yo uwill get a good feel of pricing for Stoegers and Baikals and the like. In my experience, the Russian stuff seems to be more reliable than the Turkish. Go to shotgunworld.com. they have sub forums for all makes of shotguns and you can get a great idea of reliability and issues and cheap fixes. Remington no longer imports the SPARTAN line which is actually BAIKAL. EAA is the new distributor. Hope this helps.

Look at the Mossberg "Silver Reserve" my son owns one, and for the money, it is a very nice setup.

I'd stay away from the Mossberg Silver Reserve (sorry Patriot). I've read many, many reports of busted firing pins. If you ever pick one up, you'll notice how cheapo they look and feel. Perhaps great for a youngsters gun but not great for an adult. I'd agree with the other poster's that going cheap on an O/U is only going to give you headaches later. Browning's are great and there's a ton on gunsamerica.com

CZ makes a nice O/U. I've seen a few on Gunbroker for less than $600

Another good O/U is Lanber. They're Spanish made, good quality, and don't cost a fortune. I've had one for years and have never had a problem with it.

Go to shotgunworld.com and look for LANBER. you will find that people have nothing but great things to say about them. Not sure if CDNN sells to CA anymore but they always advertise the 2087 and 2097 for 599 and 699 respectively.

With the Mossberg SR,the firing pin issue was resolved and hasn't been a problem for at least a year or longer.
Personally, I don't think they look bad or feel cheap.
I have a 20ga SA for about 3 years now, that is very reliable for occasional skeet and hunting.
You can get a new one for under five hundred at Big 5 right now.
That said, for the same amount of money you could get a much better value for your dollar on an automatic if you are just trying to expand your collection!

Stoegers too, but not near as bad. And both have had problems going off when the action is snapped shut. Been there, done that, and got the battle ribbon.
Unless it's a Huglu (CZ), stay away from Turk O/U's. Poor quality materials, it will break, and parts are non existent.
For cheap, reliable, built like an anvil, but weighs like one, Baikal.
For Browning quality on a Mossberg budget, find a used Stephano Fausti, if you can. Well kept secret until Weatherby found out about them, now they make the Weatherby shotguns.
Almost forgot Charles Daly, older ones are Browning Superposed, newer ones are Miroku, same as the Citori and the Winchester 101 without the frills.

I have one Stoeger and I don't know anybody that has another one. Having said that It is a great value and for the price I have already gotten my monies worth from it. I can't vouch for the others that say they are crap but I do have to wonder if they have ever owned on themselves or if their judgements are based on other postings elsewhere.

Given that I have shot skeet with it as well as went quail hunting with it earlier this year and probably have about 1000 rounds through it my experience has been exceptional.

                              YMMV
