External Choke vs Internal Choke

Is there any advantage of having an external choke on your gun, vs an
internal choke?

I suppose it provides some protection for the end of the barrel with an extended choke since damaging the end of the gun would damage the chock, not the barrel. But I think champu nailed the main benefit.

Also easier to tell which choke is in your barrel, depending on the labeling on the choke.

I'm assuming that you're referring to flush chokes vs extended chokes?

Advantages of extended chokes:
- Can be installed/removed without choke wrench.
- Easy to see what choke you have on the barrel.
- Also function as a protection for the crown of your barrel in case you bang it on the floor or something else.
- Looks cool.

Having used both, my opinion that the advantages of the extended choke over the flush ones are minimal. If you have flush chokes right now, it will usually not pay off if you replace the same constriction(e.g. replacing a flush Modified choke with a extended Modified choke).

I personally think people overthink when it comes to chokes, when I had my current gun customized, I have them put in fixed choke and that way I never have to think about it.

Already answered, but the only real advantage is protecting the crown of the barrel.

I constructed my own chokes. IMO, extended chokes have better patterning (more even) but it is not always true. Good flash chokes also have great patterns, what i'm trying to say, it is easier to achieve good pattern with extended choke, since the parallel area of the choke is a little longer, hence the load has a little more time to stabilize. IMO more important for steel shot.

BTW, original Mossberg Accu-chokes are great chokes out of my two Mossbergs. No improvement needed. I compared them to Carlson's and Trulock. A very similar pattern which did not need any improvement.
On the other hand, my Maxus original chokes were terrible. I tried many others and i had good results with Trulock, but the best with my own creations.
So, it depends.

I am not an expert shooter by far, But in my experience for the shooting I do ( skeet, sporting clays and 5 stand ) chokes are a little over rated! When you are ON and pointing and shooting like you should, You will be hitting birds with any choke.

I can use extended chokes and not look cool but, in fairness to the chokes, I have a lot of practice not looking cool.
