What are the types of gas operated shotguns?

There are two types of shotguns: gas and inertia. What I cannot find on google are the types of gas operated shotguns. What are the types of gas operated shotguns? Are there also different types of inertia shotguns?

All Gas operated shotguns operate on a piston.

Inertia shotguns are spring operated and obviously uses inertia of the bolt to cycle.

There shouldn't be any real difference in gas guns now a days except for return spring and gas bleed variances allowing faster cycling.

Benelli M4 uses both inertia and gas together I believe. I'm sure someone will be behind me quickly to add to that.

The newer gas guns all use self cleaning pistons so that helps with reliability, they also reduce recoil greatly.

Inertia have less parts to get fouled so they tend to last longer between cleaning and tend to be lighter as well.

Never heard of different types of gas operated shotguns UNLESS you are asking what shotguns are gas operated? Are you simply searching for what models are available?

Same thing with inertia. There is only one system with inertia, but there are several models that are slightly different on how they work, however the platform is the same.

EDIT: etwinam and BajaJames do make a point though about self cleaning and short stroke vs long stroke piston design. Example: Remington 1100 and 1187 are technically a long stroke single piston design. Remington Versamax and V3 are a two piston short stroke design. Just keep in mind the system is still the same.

I heard there were different types of gas systems for shotguns. Like short and long piston and the Argo system.

The A.R.G.O. is a gas system. The difference is simply automated compared to the old style that would require the user to switch sleeve rings out for the different loads. Both technologies use gases to push the bolt back. It's like comparing a carburetor to fuel injection. Both do the same thing, but one is newer and more efficient.

short, long, single dual, self regulating, adjustable there are many different types. Every mfg has a few different ones and variations of them.
