    Barrel Finish???

I have an older model shotgun (Remington 870) that has had most of the finish on the barrel and receiver taken off by a previous owner. Since it is pretty much bare metal I wanted to ask if anyone has any experience or suggestions on applying some kind of protective coating. I would like to try to do it myself with a relatively simple process. It is an 18" barrel that would be used for home protection. Suggestions??? Thanks

If it has been taken all the way down to bare metal there are gun bluing kits you can buy and re-finish it at home. They aren't nearly as good, IMO, as taking it to a professional but doable. Turners, Big 5, Amazon etc.

Take it apart, clean it thoroughly, prep the metal with 400 grit wet-or-dry (wet), clean it again, then spray everything with flat black lacquer in a rattle can. Make sure it is lacquer and not enamel or poly, because lacquer is easily removable with a simple soak in acetone if you want to do something else later. It is also easy to touch up if it wears over time because the fresh coat of lacquer will chemically bond to the older paint. Your total cost will be about $8, plus your time. This is a fairly common fix for 870s that get used for salt water duck hunting.

Get some Black Exhaust Manifold paint from the auto parts store. Clean barrel with acetone. Spray,,, cook in oven for a while, done.

Seen guys do complete guns like this, and if the gun is a beater it is a prime candidate for this treatment. If the gun has rust pitting on the exterior or is in generally bad shape you can bring it back to "Presentable" with a few hours of simple work for the cost of a Can of Paint..

Cheapest most effective way to do it and the results are similar to Cera-Kote.
