    First shotgun, lil help?

    Hey guys,

I'm gonna be buying my first shotgun (believe it or not) here soon and could use some help from you guys.

I am lookin at the following Remington 870 (magnum), Mossberg 500 or the Mossberg 590. This will be a home defense / close quarters shotgun. What do you guys think?

    Thanks for your help!

You can't go wrong with either of the shotguns you have listed. How much did you have set aside for the shotgun?

I should say, I like the smaller barrel of the 500 and the capacity of the 590 and heat shield. I know I cant have the best of both worlds so your experiences are appreciated.

If you are going to spend $400-$500, I know that the 590A1 which has the heat shield and all that good stuff will be in your price range. Also you can look for the 870 wingmasters, Ithca 37 will also make great HD shotguns. I personally have a $150 mossberg 500 and it works fine and perfect for the need. If you search this forum, you will find out A LOT of info on this subject already too.

Cant really go wrong with any of those three choices. The differences between the 500 and the 590 is in the magazine tube design. It'll be easier to replace the barrel in the 500 but the 590 is easier to keep clean and to replace some parts like the magazine spring and follower. (and about $100) The 590A1 is a more heavy duty 590 with an aluminium trigger guard and safety, and a heavier barrel. The 870 is also a great HD shotgun. I have both the 500a and the 870 magnum and I like them equally.

Both Mossberg and Remington make great shotguns. You won't go wrong with either. One of the big differences between the two is the position of the safety. The Remingtons have the safety on the trigger guard, while the Mossbergs have a "tang" safety, which sits on top of the reciever. Find a range that rents both, or find someone who has either and go shoot them. That is the best way to find if you like it or not. Plus shooting shotguns is fun

I've been extremely happy with my 870 Express Magnum. I was originally looking for a Benelli Nova but a deal presented itself and I took it; glad I did. I don't have experience shooting Mossie's but I don't think you can go wrong with an 870. Tons of parts for both available.

My 870 had an 18" barrel, and factory mag extension. Seems like a workhorse. What else can you ask for?

If you only want home defense out of it, the 590 is in my opinion about the sweetest deal on the table. The 500 is probably your best bang for buck though--Big 5 has them on sale right now for $289.

Wow! Thanks for all the info guys. I just signed up for the forums last week and the info is incredible. I will check out that place in Oceanside and shoot them both or all three and go from there.

                        Thanks again

Care to share how much you paid? Those are also a great suggestion because of the GR sights already.
