Removing magazine dimples

I just used a dremel and I’m not very handy. It was easy.

I don’t know why you smash a socket in. About 2 minutes with a dremel is all it takes.

Thanks for the tips. Have a couple days before my extension arrives, so still have time to decide. The drilling method definitely seems easiest, just worried about the holes left over.

You drill them out with a 5/16th drill bit. Do not bang on your tube. If you crack the braising you have a factory repair. All the manufacturers recommend drilling them out and so does Remington. Go to www.aiptactical.com and there is a video showing you how to do it. If you decide to bang them out and FUBAR your receiver you can send it to Remington and they will replace it for around $120 or you buy a new receiver. Read the back of the package the Choate tubes come in and they also have instructions on how to drill them out. The correct way to do this has been on line and on this forum for about 12 years and you would think people would know the correct way to do it by now and stop giving guys advise that can damage their gun.

I will add that the guy in the Brownell's video is a complete knucklehead. He puts the butt of the gun on the deck then sticks that tool in the magazine tube and starts banging on the tool to raise the detents. That force can break the braising bead or crack it where the tube is braised into the receiver. Don't know who he is or why Brownell's has clueless people working for them but I am sure the have cause me to sell a lot of recievers over the years and even more sent in to the factory for repair.

I just used a grinder wheel on the dremel. No drilling was needed.

Yeah, I got em out by grinding them out. Thanks for the input everyone, glad I didn’t try banging em out.

Anyone know of any ghost ring sight options for this Chinese hunk of steel? I know Wilson’s won’t fit because of the receiver profile which probably means XS is out too.

I read your concern about holes left over. Why? Look at the old Wingmasters and you see a hole in the exact place the top detent is on the Express. That is an air relief hole. Also, the end of magazine cap and the end of the tube extensions have a hole in them. Also, the holes left by drilling are covered by the barrel ring. As you push shell into the magazine tube you push air into the tube and that needs an escape. Thus the air vent on the old Wigmaster and holes in the mag caps and mag tube extension. The holes left over from drilling out the detents are covered by the barrel ring but still allow air to escape.

Seems like an easy way to do it. Dremelling them out also works. I've had that done in the past.

Socket Method

As I posted, I love the Socket method because it helps me sell new receivers. A customer sent me this picture and purchased a new virgin 870P receiver from me after he use the socket on his and did not want to be without a shotgun for a couple months while it was at the factory getting repaired. See the nice bulge the socket makes. I have little doubt that he also cracked the braising also.
