    MOSSBERG 930 JM UPGRADES?

I just purchased a Mossberg 930 JM for 3 gun competition where I will likely be shooting mostly 7.5 target/birdshot I have heard positive and negative feedback on this gun but with the money I have invested in other toys the price was right ($599 on sale at Turners).

I haven't shot this yet so I don't know if I will experience any of the problems some others have had. My good friend has one and says his has shot flawlessly for 3 gun.

Never the less, I would like to learn in advance what common problems might exist and what the fixes are so I am prepared. I have heard and visited the website for OR3GUN and see their replacements for the follower, spacer tube, forearm retainer and spring plunger. I also see replacing the charging bolt handle with a bigger one (GG&G) seems to be popular.

Interested in feedback on your experience with this gun and these products. Thanks! Oh I should also note I am not a championship level shooter. This is all for fun and I am just trying to avoid malfunctions primarily.

Run some OR3GUN parts and you'll be good to go... Mainly their Marine spacer. Check mcarbo trigger kit also, cheap easy and an inexpensive improvement.

Which charging handle did yours come with?

Thanks - I haven't picked it up yet, but I assume it is the factory charging handle. Looks like some people replace with a bigger one i guess just for feel?

Mossberg makes a "tactical" handle that almost the same as the GGG one. I have two 930s, one Tactical and one Pro Series Sporting. They are really nice shotguns for the money.

If it's a JM Pro the charging handle is pretty big. Check the website.

Seems like everyone opens up the loading port.

You also need a brass brush for gas chamber (under the barrel), bunch of old t-shirts and a ball of steel wool, a little bottle of mineral oil and a choke wrench.

The only problem with 930 i have is that it rusts like crazy... It will rust in a gas chamber (where the piston is located), also magazine tube (where gas piston reciprocates) will rust as well, barrel extension and choke threads too.

Though i have a standard 930, not jm pro. I heard jm pro has some coatings.

It's a gas gun - you need to run it "dry" or internals will be covered with powder/unburned powder particles and you'll have to clean it, clean it, clean it...
If it's dry - it will be relatively clean for a long period of time...

Every time you shoot - make your life easier and clean the gun immediately after shooting. At the range. If you run it "dry" - don't have to clean inside (remove trigger assembly, etc) every time.

1)Just remove magazine cap, remove barrel - you'll see a lot of stuff on a magazine tube, in a gas chamber, on a piston.
2)Run patch (piece of rag) with oil through bore several times - cover it with oil, to protect from rusting. This days all ammo uses plastic wads - nothing special inside the bore.
            3) Turn brush in a gas piston chamber couple of times, wipe it with oiled rag and then "dry" it - wipe it with dry rag very well.
            4) Steel wool on a magazine tube and same oil/non-oil rag procedure.
            5) wipe off piston
            6) assemble it back.

(you need a choke wrench with you all the time - choke unscrews itself during shooting... And from time to time clean threads in a bore with some oil. Or choke with rust-in)

Takes literally 10 minutes. Saves a lot of headache in the future. And you don't have to deal with dirty rags at home, stinky gun cleaning liquids, etc. Plus every time you take it from gun cabinet - it's clean and ready to go!

All great info, I have a JM pro and it's a workhorse. I've put close to 1000 rounds through it before in one trip to BLM. I couldn't guess at how many rounds total but I'd say well over 10k and it's still running strong.

I tend to run my shotguns wet like an AR but it makes sense not to, I'll have to run it dry and see how much easier the clean up is.

Since I have the jm pro I dont see any point in upgrades, it's basically already upgraded. I have heard the follower upgrade can be beneficial. I currently have to insert my finger in pretty deep to the magazine till the round clicks or it will come flying out. If a follower upgrade would mitigate that I would buy one today.

Thanks much. or3gun sells a blue follower that supposedly protrudes out further than the original. They claim the combo of the blue and larger/longer follower allows for a better visual and physical reference to see if you are out of ammo and an easier reference for loading. I pick mine up tomorrow so I'll definitely inspect and do some practice loading.

Any update on the follower? Is it worth it for better loading or is it just easier to see?

I am itching for the Mossberg 930 JM Pro too, the 24 inch tube model. I hope many more owners chime in to this thread.
