If a shotgun is chambered for 2 3/4" can changing the barrel change what it is chambered for or do I need to modify the receiver too?

Chamber length exclusive to receiver or barrel?

2 3/4' & 3" shells have the same SAAMI standard 11500 psi. If you install a 3" chamber barrel on a 2 3/4" receiver you won't damage the receiver if you fire 3" shells. The problem you may run into is the receiver maybe setup for 2 3/4" shells only and want cycle the longer 3" shells.
On some 870 2 3/4" receivers the ejector is higher up and it's not made for 3" shells. They want eject reliably.
As most know: Don't fire 3" shells in a 2 3/4" chambered barrel.

The ejector is into the receiver. A gunsmith can install a new ejector but it will probably be costly. It will also damage the finish on the outside of the receiver.
If you can compare your ejector to one on a 3" 870 receiver. You may have a regular ejector; some of the 2 3/4" receivers do. Better yet get a 3" "fired" shell hull and stick it in your 2 3/4" chambered barrel and close the bolt on it and see if you shotgun will reject it.

FWIW,
My newer 3" 870 Rem-choke barrel notes to only shoot 3" inch shells in "Magnum" marked recievers. Why do you suppose it states that?

To cover their butt. When barrels are switched around mistakes can be made. Someone could end up firing 3" shells in 2 3/4" chamber barrel. My newer 3" 870 Rem-choke barrel notes to only shoot 3" inch shells in "Magnum" marked receivers. Why do you suppose it states that?
