    Weatherby Pump Action Feeding Problem

I have a Weatherby PA-459 that I got a few years ago for home defense. It recently started having a problem where sometimes the pump does not extract the next shell from the magazine. It looks like the shell gets stuck on what I think the manual calls the "feed latch". Pushing the shell in a little bit lets the latch retract and then then I can pump it into the chamber. I don't know enough about shot guns to really diagnose what is happening. Does anyone have any ideas?

The shell catch is there and should release after the trigger is pulled. Does this happen with real rounds? Some of the snap caps get deformed over time?

Is there sufficient pressure on the follower? Some followers are plastic and will get mushy with either Oil or brake cleaner/ powder blaster.

Once mushy, they press against the side of the mag tube and cause a lot of problems.

Have you removed disassembled the mag tube? check and cleaned the spring and follower? With one round loaded, does it have enough pressure to push the round onto the elevator?
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
    (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

I noticed the problem at the range with real rounds, so I bought enough snap caps so I could fill the magazine and try to diagnose the problem at home. I took the magazine apart, and everything looked OK (as nearly as I could tell). The feed failure seems to happen consistently on the second round in the magazine. The first, third, fourth and fifth cycle correctly. I've also noticed that the pump isn't always locking on an empty chamber. I wonder if the two problems are related?
