Article: Choosing A Buckshot Load For Home Defense

Good Article by Greg Ellifritz. A couple of the key points...

Why a tighter patterning round is better for home defense and why you should stay away from the 9 pellet versions of 00 Buck.

I'm sure there will be some disagreement.

Oh and, in before the "you should use birdshot crowd!"

sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

You know, I was shooting birdshot in this video.

Granted it was only about 7 yards but I think it is basically a column of shot or a hammer at that range. I'm willing to give this option more consideration, at least at close range or as a load for the wife to use.

This is all fine and good but the point that was left out was the shotguns themselves, and more properly the barrels.

There is a guy by the name of Hans Vang who has been modifying Police shotguns for 30+ years and is widely known in the LE community for producing shotguns that shoot better and pattern tighter than anything that is stock from the box.

The product is called the Vang Comp Process and it consists of barrel work only.

The barrels forcing cone is lengthened form about 3/4" to 3"+, then the barrel is back bored to about .740-.745. The Reamer that is used has 2" tapered down to .730 thus creating a choke effect on the barrel.

          My Mossberg 500 20" barreled Tac gun shoots #8 birdshot into 7" at 15 yards/ 45 feet. It shoots Buck into 4" at 15 yards/45 feet, and 7" at 25 yard/ 75 feet.

This far exceeds anything this guy in the videos was getting with unmodified Shotguns.

My whole point here is that Hans Vang is not some hidden character with no track record.. He has modified literally thousands of Police and Military shotguns for hundreds of Departments in the US and Elsewhere.

And yet this video made no mention of it at all.

The ammo is not the solution to the problem, it's the gun

A great article...thanks for posting it.

IMO, the "you should use birdshot" crowd know zero about physics...see below.

It's a column of shot, as is a buckshot load.

Energy is based on velocity and weight of a projectile...for shotguns, energy is not determined by the entire charge weight, but only of an individual pellet.

Think about why shotgun shells are offered with different pellet weights.

Well, for most people who use a shotgun for home defense the pattern is very tight anyway. You're talking maybe 10 yards. It is likely quite different for Police who may be shooting longer distances. Joe homeowner doesn't need a special barrel.

Besides an AR is a better weapon for home defense anyway.

federal flight control ammo stays tight for those that want a tight pattern and cannot afford mods or have a basic cylinder bore shotgun.

My HD Benelli M1 S90 is kept cruiser loaded with 8 pellet 00 flight control but I would be curious to see how 9 pellet FC performed.
