Putting a rail on a Mossy 500?

I got a Mossy 500 a while ago and want to put a scope on it. Is it safe to drill and tap the receiver? Has anyone done this?

I am planning on doing the same thing to my 500 so I can mount a mini red dot. It was made before they started coming factory drilled and tapped.

You will want to use a thread forming tap instead of a regular tap in the aluminum.

You can buy barrels with the rails already on them. But my 500 came already drilled and tapped.
